Climate Control 98 E300 TD

Weird problem. My climate control acts strange in my 98 E300. All fuses are ok though, and if I override the Auto (thermostat) feature, the fan and temp control seems to work. However, something just isn't right. I recently spent 2500 mi in the car over the holidays and figured out what is wrong: the passenger side controls affect the driver, and the driver side controls affect the passenger!! I know this is true, as I can turn off one, and control the other side alone with the opposite controls.

Gilly, other 210 owners or anyone else ever heard of this problem? According to the previous owner, the only work that has been done to the car was a replaced glow plug relay, so I don't think any one has monkeyed with the system.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'm sure to bet that climate control was removed and the plugs in the back switched. Just get the tool to slide out the climate control. Any good stereo shop, MB service center or dealer has these. Those same keys will remove your radio as well...

Thanks for the reply....

Come to think of it, the PO removed the disk changer from the trunk, and I bet he did something while he had the head unit out.

It is possible the wires are hooked up backwards but I doubt it. I had many many problems with my climate control unit before I finally got it fixed. So many I won't list them all. I heard ALL of the reasons and still nothing improved. The control panel was replaced twice, numerous thermostats were replaced many times, vacuum system was hauled apart once and still the climate control system would not work correctly. All warrenty work. Then the compressor etc stopped at 51000 miles and I got the bill. MB helped with part of it but not much. Since the warrenty is out I now go to a local independent.

A local mechanic fixed the problem on the first try. Have your car checked for error codes. If you have lots of error codes, some of which are not related to the climate control unit. there is a relay in the car that is bad. I can not remember which one it is but it was expensive, sorry. That was money well spent as the climate control has been perfect ever since. The best part of this story is that I made a new friend and will always take my car to Chuck for repairs I can't do or are too lazy to do.

Have a great day
