What is this part?

I found this knob laying in the low spot behind my headlights, on the drivers side.

What could it be? The back side has a threaded hole.

I hope this isn't too easy for you folks....

Hard to tell how big it is from the picture, but looks like the cap nut for the power steering resevoir.

It's an inch tall and less than an inch and a quarter wide at the base.

Thanks folks.

The previous owner must have replaced it with a locking nut for some reason...

When I started to change a headlight bulb on my wagon I found that it could be done without tools... there were very big , nice, hand friendly nuts back there.. and it sounds like directly above where you found this nut.... might check that.....

I agree with Leathermang, I think it has something to do with the headlights. Look closely at the pic and you can see a double-ended arrow on the top of the knob.

Yes you're right Holson, but that isn't a power steering nut is it ? I have to go look at my car and see. I know I've seen that somewhere under the hood

Holson, I was just guessing... I turn 54 tomorrow so I am pleading senile dementia for an excuse...I was smart enough to add the qualifier " might check that"....

I guess my eyes are going too... because I can't see any double ended arrow in the picture..

I knew I saw it under the hood somewhere, but I was thinking of the wrong car. My 300D has a wingnut on the PS pump, my 300CE has a knob just like the top picture, so I guess that makes me both a wingnut AND a knob .

It sounds like they've changed the type of nut they used for the power steering resevior over the years, but, down to the arrows, that's exactly what I have on my '85...and, although I could be wrong, I don't remember ever seeing a nut like that anywhere else...

JUst my $.04
