Front Seat Belt on 1985 300D won't release

The Front Seat Belt on my 1985 Mercedes 300D won't release. I took it out of the car and it still wont release. My hunch is that this item can't be repaired and it has to be replaced. I'm alittle leery of dissasembling it too much as I dont want to watch the inside spring uncoil all over my garage..

Is there a way to fix this thing?

When you sat the seat belt wont release, do you mean the belt will not play out/retract or that the latch will not release the male portion of the buckle?

The Strap with the Buckle won't play out....

The Strap with the Buckle won't play out. I have taken the Seat Belt Out of the car. Maybe this week I will dissect it if I can find one from a supplier (junkyard) or if I think I can repair it...

While you’re at it, maybe someone has a fix for my 84 TD seatbelt problem. The removeable part won't latch up in the catch/release mechanism attached to the passenger seat. The belt latches in the driver’s saide, so I know the fault lies in the latch mechanism. Is it fixable or do I have to pull the seat and replace the entire mechanism?

If the belt wont play out it sounds like the ratchet mechanism is stuck. Did the car take any hard hits? Prior to air bags MB started with the ETR's, which automatically retract the belts in an impact. Possible that the ETR had been deployed, but more likely the catch which stops the belt from playing out in an impact, or better stated during a hard stop, is jammed. You might be able to free that up, but will likely have to replace the entire mechanism. Don't try to open the spool to attempt repair, there is a very long coiled main spring inside. Once you pop open the case it will come flying out at you (don't ask how I know ).

Some years ago I had a 123 car where the receptacle, the part mounted to the seat would not hold the belt. We were in the middle of a trip and this became a nightmare.

In trying to solve it quickly I bought a can of WD40. I put a rag under the seat latch and flooded it. I use the seat belt repeatedly inserted it and removed it. It finally started catching and worked well ever since.

My guess is the accumulation of dirt, food stuff (yikes Kids!) etc just gummed it up.

Hope this helps.
