84300DT,
From where I am watching on TV it seems you should wait until tomorrow to begin the digging out. I am stuck in Philadelphia. Arrived on a USAirways flight yesterday afternoon from Rome, probably one of the last to land before they shut the airport down. The snow confused the engine fire detection system and we screeched to a halt and waited for fire trucks and the like to come out and inspect the plane, then they towed it to a remote "terminal" and sent these bus like things with adjustable passenger compartment heights out to retrieve us. Landed at around 3 pm and got through customs at 6 pm. Anyway, the TV says you (and my family in CT) will be seeing snow until tomorrow night. It seems to be tapering off here. Good Luck, Jim

yes jim you must have been one of the last planes in. it's still
coming down at about 1 inch per hour here in fairfield county and expect will last until tonight so we may end up with a couple of feet with bigger drifts, but the wind has tapered off a bit now. the car was clean when was entombed so hope it will stay that way! good luck on your way home. bob

Arrrgh!! I have already shovelled the driveway once, about 8" and that was around 1pm. Now its looking like I never did it. The next person who says "winters in New England aren't like they used to be" is getting a nice knuckle sandwich. Currently searching/surfing the job boards for employment far south of the mason-dixon line. This is ridiculous. RT

Wow, those pictures make your situation all too clear. Out west it is just.... raining. Been a semi dry and average temp sort of winter here. Which means a little less rain.

Bob,
Just spoke to the wife and kids, they are also shovelling every few hours. It seems the forecast is for enough snow that my wife convinced my two sons to shovel every so often rather than wait until the driveway (about 300 ft or so) and turn around area became indistinguishable from the rest of the yard. Hope it is clear for me to drive into tomorrow. Jim

A buddy of mine, who works at the Pentagon, says, as soon as the snow melts, he is heading south. He plans on holding his tire chains out the driver-side window, and driving until someone asks him "What's that?". That is where he says he'll move to.

BAM!BAM!BAM!
Bob, nice photos of your blue bomber! Did you help the wife shovel? Or were you sitting back enjoying the whiteout? Here in the witch city has been a little later than y'all, snow wise. We ONLY have about 8 or10 inches thus far. Both the truck and the black benz have been "forced" off the street due to the snow emergency....they are both under cover in the municipal garage. No snow or ice on them.
If only I had not twisted the s*it out of my GOOD knee 2 weeks ago.....then the cross country skis (wood and wax only) would be a blast! I may consider the snowshoes tho... Turbodiesel, good luck w/ the snowblower! I bet those trax help a lot. What are those other cars shown? Looks like a 123 series and something else. Good luck... This seems to be a reunion of sorts from the GTG. I was going to post a sort of spoof post about another gtg here this weekend...should be warming up to the mid 40's! JimSmith, where are you traveling from? Hope the trip is a safe one... Rw, what is allthis b*tching about the snow? I think that "y'all" are from these parts! We don't need them non new englanders thinking we are just wimps. By the way, how is your extremely nice anthracite 300 doing? Probably sleeping deep within a warm garage.......what is this about you "looking" for a 300sdl? Regards to your lovely wife whose name escapes me. Oh well, lately, w/ the bitter cold I have been making sure to either park the Benz or the truck DIRECTLY in front of the apartment bldg so as to have direct access to the electrical outlet for the block heater.........big difference w/ the 15/ 20 dino oil! Good luck guys and keep those diesels humming! spo out |

I don't have a similar story to share... my 300CD is a coward and it's just hibernating in the garage. :p
However there's a lot of cars outside that just can't move because of the snow. Today I couldn't stop laughing when I saw this familiar rice box that could barely move in the snow because his front wheels have so much negative camber. Even winter beaters just drove past him.... Love this winter hehehe I just wish I had a G320 CDI hehehe

Spo123,
Good to hear you are alive and well in the big storm dominating the news all day. Did you change that water pump yet? If not, it might not be too bad to do it while it is in that garage. I am now slowly making my way home from a week long business trip to Florence, Italy. Seems Philly has a way of trapping me as I spent a day or so in 1999 or 2000 here in a snowstorm too. Hope everyone stays safe, and I second the motion there to learn to love the snow when it happens. In most cases it is some extra work shovelling or if you have one, snow blowing, now and then. And in other cases it changes your plans, like this one. But hurricanes and tornados as well as earthquakes plague other parts of the world, and I think snow is the gentlest of them. Common sense and a little planning and the worst you have is a couple days of being shut in. Good luck, Jim

It snowed . . .and then sleeted . . .
I tried to keep up with the snow by shoveling the drive clean 5 times during the storm. The SDL and the ML sat in the garage and laughed at me. 23" here, BUT 49" in far western Maryland as reported by two different TV stations! I guess I was "lucky."

spo, cheers + no i was 'watching' the snow today, tomorrow is my digging day hehe. sort of like cleaning a teenager's room - might as well wait til they're 20...
besides, the wife was doing so well, i would have only messed it up or 'shoveled wrong' or something .. also had the x-country skis out here today for a bit- pretty rare for these parts. saw a couple of snowmobiles running the streets as well at about 40-50mph past us with a cop not too far behind. hope ur black beast is ticking over ok - the muni garage sounds like a great call
