Hi, I need some help
I have 1985 300D Turbo When I am making left turns, there is some noise coming from the front right wheel. What could be wrong? Thank you Steve |

Could be the sway bar (bushings?)... mine recently devoloped a noise when driving slowly over bumps but it only does it when there are four people in it. Hopefully someone that knows what it is for sure and how to fix it will reply.

Steve,
If the noise is consistent, happens every time you load the wheel up in a particular way (speed, turning radius) the problem is likely wheel bearings. These are a replaceable part and are not a high dollar item. For the most part if you are hearing noise only in certain circumstances, the wear is just getting to be a problem. It will not likely leave you stranded in the near future, but it is something you need to fix as it can lead to control and safety problems. I have seen a rear wheel bearing sieze (the fellow left his e-brake on since the dash light did not work, and drove about 120 miles on the highway), and cause a lot of collateral damage. So, I would get it fixed, or fix it myself pretty soon. Good Luck, Jim

Another possibility is the nut needs to be tightened properly. If the nuts too loose, the hub will shift when you make a turn and then the brake rotor will rub on the brake pads. (Same will happen with a worn out bearing)

I have the same problem with my 99 TD. It started after the dealer replaced the engine "shock absorber" ( I don't know what it's called). It only happens on left turns when accelerating and seems to come from the right side of my engine. It is a grinding hum type of sound. I hope it is wheel bearings...

Worn engine mounts and/or low power steering fluid will cause that on the 99.

Had this problem...turned out that the wheel rim was
bent (pothole) on the inside flange where it didn't show. Made noise whenever wheel revolved and rubbed against another surface. Not something I would have expected.

I had my 99TD checked out and the noise turned out to be a bent brake shield that rubbed on the tie rod when turning left. The mechanic just bent it back into place, works fine now. Thanks for the help.
