Please help identify these numbered parts.

Dear friends:

I've just gotten a 1981 Mercedes 240D (Manual) and will receive a Haynes W123 repair manual next week. Since I'm a diesel newbie (even though I'm pretty familiar with gasoline cars), I really need your help in identifying the various parts in this diesel car.

Please take a look at the attached image and give a brief description of each part (numbered in the image) and its corresponding function.

Thank you in advance for all your precious help.

Best regards,

Eric

1- injector return line
2- injector fuel supply line
3- injector
4-alda
5- main vac line
6- fuel filter - spin on
7- fuel filter - in line
8- cigar fuel return line to tank
9- injection pump

Compared to my car, you have the incorrect tubing in there for 1 and 8. The bolt that is plugging the end of 1 on the right looks bad.

Having the wrong tubing on there may or may not matter, but I would change it. Other members may have other ideas.

I tend to agree with surfblau, the injector return lines don't look right. They look almost like aquarium tubing. Injector return hose generally looks like a black fuel hose with a braided exterior. I hope the piece at the end that is terminated with what looks like a screw isn't actually a screw. If it is you should get the proper plug for it also. The hose and the plug are both cheap. If one of those hoses breaks or the plug gives out you will probably be stranded wherever it happens to give out. The "cigar hose" that surfblau has referred to is usually bloated or flared in the middle. I believe that its shape does something to absorb the energy pulses from the injectors firing. If it were me I'd replace that one as well. The least it could do is possibly make a slight difference in how the engine runs and, if the current hose material isn't compatible with diesel, it just might save your backside.

I have to agree with the injector return lines, you need to replace them with the proper 3.5mm cloth braided lines, they are cheap. You also need to replace the cigar hose, they are less than $10. It also looks like something is leaking near the injectors, you should probally take care of that leak also. You might also want to change your fuel filters to the proper German filters sometime. The Fram and Wix filters aren't as good as the German ones, and they tend to cost more, the same goes for all the filters. It also looks that your oil cooler lines coming off of the oil filter housing might have a slight leak also. Other than that, things look good.

The "ears" on the injection pump, held down by bolts, are the calibration adjustment on this pump, DO NOT move them, ever. I say this because your arrows appear to point to them.

This adjustment is internal on all the other IPs used by MB, only visible on this particular type. There is no need for the "user" to every move them.

You definitely need the correct overflow line, diesel fuel usually eats anything else, including vaccum line, causing fuel to dribble out all over everything. Smells bad and causes poor milage, since the lift pump supplies far more fuel than in injected, and the overflow will leak out those little lines rather than run back to the tank.

Enjoy your "new" diesel!

Peter

Eric:

May I be so bold as to HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Mercedes Benz shop manuals over Haynes et. al.

Here's some reading on the subject:

Best of luck with your 240D. That ('83) was my first Benz.
