Thinkin' about replacing the passenger window regulator today......1977 300D, W123.

Any advice before I jump in.......

Pretty straightforward job......

Took about 1 hour, while taking breaks to watch the Masters.

JCD, I may need to replace my driver's side window regulator on my '79 300D W123.

I have never done this before.

I'd probably buy the part new at Fastlane.

Could you (or any body else) give me a hand with some steps and what to avoid.
I'd be doing this alone so no second pair of hands available.

I'd appreciate it.

Anyone done the rears before?

I've got a donor car that I can have the rear motors from the windows but wtihout power to lower the windows I couldn't figure out how to get the motors out.

Any help would be appreciated...

So tomorrow I can give you some more details.

The trickiest part is removing the door panels. After removing the hardware, I started at the bottom and carefully pulled the panel away from the door. There are plastic clips that if you're not careful, i.e. Pull gently on both sides of each clip, you'll rip the clip out of the door panel.

Once the door panel is out, you remove the plastic sheet and start to work. First remove the rod that operates the door lock mechanism (I think this is on the driver's side as well as the passenger). Then you remove the nuts holding the regulator, while having someone hold the window or blocking in up. Remove and replace.......pretty simple.

I'll try to describe it better tomorrow evening so I can provide more details.

One more thing, if you have a chance, get some spare vacuum gaskets for the door lock mechanism. You might as well replace them while you're in the door.

I tried but did not get too far the first time out. I figured I was heading down the path of destroying the usable parts and stopped.
The manual says to lower the window completly. Well without power this seems to be a pretty neat trick.
And with the window up the motor is way up in the back of the door panel and virtualy inaccessible to 99.9% of us normal human beings. A contortionist maybe but not me!

By the way, fastlane sells a window regulator kit.(washers etc.)
Is this needed ? I plan to but a new regulator but I don't know if it comes with new washers etc.

You will need a phillips head screwdriver and a 10mm wrench and socket.

1. Remove door hardware and carefully pry the door panel off.

2. If your window is stuck up like mine was you will have to pry the bottom of the door panel off and then reach up the outside of the window regulator and remove the motor. There are 3 10 mm bolts that hold it on. Look at your replacement for orientation, lay on your back and remove it. This will also remove the main gear and allow you to slide the window down and fully remove the door panel.

3. There are three bolts and, I think, two nuts that hold the window regulator to the door. Remove them. Finally remove the nuts that attach the window regulator to the bottom frame of the window. You will have to lower the window all the way down to do this, as well as orient the window frame bolt that is to the outside of the door such that you can get at it through a hole in the door.

4. Remove the window regulator and have someone hold the window in place.

5. Replace the window regulator and replace the bolts that fasten the window regulator to the frame on the bottom of the window.

I think that's it.

Take it slow, have a helper, and if you have any questions, please post.

Thanks Jim, I will give it a shot in the near future. My driver's side window developed a klunk as it goes down or up at around
1/4 the way from the top closed position. So I suspect the regulator, as my 300SE had the same symptom. (repaired by the mechanic).

I'll post results when it is done.

....here on my 1983 300SD which might be of help.

I am about ready to embark on a regulator replacement in my 108 chassis gasser- if you buy a new regulator, do you need to buy the regulator repair kit with washers and other pieces, or does the new one come with all of this stuff?

My 78 240D drivers side window stopped about 1 inch from the top and wouldn't budge. This was about 8 months ago. I pulled the door panel. Removed the regulator completely( not a fun job!) and found it slightly bent. I managed to straighten the regulator. Lubed all the moving joints and tracks. Re-assembled the entire thing and it works like a champ now. Easier and smoother than ever. I think it gets dry with age and not being lubed for years and then requires more effort to move. Finally it gets bent. I was gonna put electric stuff in it as I have a 78 300D I'm going to part out but I'm just gonna leave it manual. Less trouble. Gonna have a lot of stuff to sell soon.

oldfrt, what do you use for lube????

Now my driver's side window works perfect. I still will remove the door panel to investigate. Something caused the snag/hestitations before.

I just used regular white lithium lube in the spray can. With the long red nozzle you can really get it in between the joints and track. I'm currently dyeing the interior so I'm gonna lube all the window mechanisms when I pull the door panels.
Works good in the door latches too.
