Leaking freeze plug & IP removal ?

Freeze plug behind IP is leaking on 82SD. If I scribe the housing to show location of IP before removing it can I just replace it, lining up the scribe marks I made after replacing freeze plug. I dont want to have to retime the IP unless absolutely necessary, since then I'll be reminded that the chain has 4 degrees stretch so I may as well replace that, and its almost time to check the valves and I should do something about that leak around the oil filter cannister. It never ends. God I love old MB diesels!!!!!

I think you need to bite the bullet and retime.. however, why don't you just use the offset key which Mercedes provides for getting your cams back nearer where they need to be ? That is what they make those for.. because the chain is still plenty strong.. it just needs to be tweaked....with relation to the cam.....
