Engine oil

what is the best type of oil to put in a high mileage 83 300sd. Also I think im going to replace the oil filter what type would be best for the car?

I believe it is close to 8 quarts...but be careful to not overfill

Definitely use a universal grade. Examples are; Chevron Delo, Mobil Delvac, Shell Rotella T.

I just got the mobil one 15w 50 and I'm gonna use that. It is reccomended on the new mb tech sheet.

Mobil-1 15W-50 is one of the best you can use for this application - good choice. Fill spec is 7.9 quarts, but out of 8 quart bottles you'll always have a smidge left, so you'll be awfully close just dumping in 8 bottles. I never worry about that last tenth. With M-1 you don't need to change before at least 5kmi, btw...

The car seems to be running better. lot less smoke from the exhaust and much smoother at idle

Funny, I keep hearing that from people who switch to synthetic. Makes you wonder why the anti-synthetic crowd are so against the stuff, claiming massive oil leaks & such. Oh well, glad it worked well for you! Works great in my cars too.

I don't have anything against synthetic oils, other than I had a few major leaks and it wastes moeny and oil. Now that most of the leaks are fixed, I might be tempted to go to the dark side once again and use synthetic oils
