Question Convert Power Sunroof to Manual?

My mechanic was working on converting a BMW top from power to manual just because it breaks once a year and now I'm thinking of converting my non working sunroof to manual.

What do you guys think I would need?
a 240D's manual sunroof maybe?

has anyone ever done this?

Just because a BMW breaks once a year, doesn't mean your Merc will. I mean really, don't go looking for trouble. Keep your car the way it is, unless it's broken, don't fix it!

The Euro model 300D has a manual sunroof. I have one of those as a parts car. Not a bad set up. Wonder if it is the same as a 240?

I am not sure.... but does your car possibly have a manual backup for closing it with no electricity ? If so I sure would not worry about it..

He already said it doesn't work.

Don't know about this, Holson. It would seem that by the time you acquire all the parts and do the conversion, you could have fixed the electric one. Once fixed, it should be pretty reliable.

Holson,
Have you done a troubleshoot on it ? I just got mine working...it was the switch. Removed it from the dash, carefully took it apart,(don't lose any parts !)cleaned the dirt ,hair, etc. out of it, scraped on the contacts and it's working great. The power sunroof is a sweet thing when it works !

My sunroof needs a new cable and I need to mount the motor on the chassis. I bought it without knowing that it didn't have a motor!

The cable's chewed up at the part where it goes into the motor.

Basically I need to somehow open it, replace the cable, and put everything back together. Doesn't seem hard but I can't open the sunroof in any way (I tried pulling the cable but it wouldnt move)

In summer I'll try to have someone push down on the sunroof at the back and ill pull the cable from the trunk.

My bad, I didn't catch that his roof didn't work... I'm shocked for a car as clean as Holson's, the roof broke... Ah well, these things happen.

My car only looks clean. But the sunroof doesn't work. The rear windows go up and down now but after working them for a while they break.. then I have to rip everything apart again and they'll work again for a while....

The A/C leaks...

Oh well at least the engine and tranny are in really good shape...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I guess I'm just gonna buy that $80 cable and fix it myself this summer.

Now ... if only I could open it up..

Most of the 123 300 TD and TDT had a manual sliding roof.. If your power sliding roof has gone bad using one of those is a common thing as every thing fits except you have to remove the cable from the roof area.. so it will not hit any thing.. I am not real sure as I have not done it but one fellow told me he only had to use the parts from the manual and kept the metal outer part so he did not have to repaint it..
