diesel exhaust systems

I lost my rear muffler today.... car sounds better too....

Actually it is not loud at all, just a bit of a sporty sound (and the car is 30lbs lighter).

Before I go and spend a bunch of $$$ on replacement parts, does anyone have advice on the subject??

Is there such a thing as "free flow" for diesels???

Any 240 driver will understand where I am coming from, that is, to pick up a horse or two would be nice...

But, if not I'll stay with stock set up.
anybody have any advice??
thanks
dave

I don't know of any pre-built systems, but IMHO on a diesel, the fewer restrictions you have in the exhaust system, the better. You don't have to worry about burning valves or anything like that. Essentially, if you went to a bigger size (all the way from the manifold) and eliminated the muffler altogether, you'd be okay. Just make sure that it's legal to straight-pipe the engine; many states don't allow it...in CA, though, all you need is some form of restriction, so it's okay to straight-pipe a turbo.

My $.02...good luck!

Just weld on a straight pipe with a turned down end where the old muffler was. Get that exhaust and some noise out from under the car and reduce back pressure a smidge all with a short pipe scrap .

Dave,

I lost the rear muffler on my 220D and put on a straight pipe. Slightly louder but never hurt the engine. The front muffler is enough for me. Did the same thing to my 300SD and it doesn't sound any louder. Maybe because of the turbo on the 300SD??

I had completely removed mine past the turbo down pipe with no problems at all. I just put mine back on for lower sound levels (Although I LOVED the diesel sound!)

Probably. I used to own an IH Scout with a turbo diesel that was straight-piped. I once met up with a guy who had a naturaly-aspirated version of the same engine, and was properly muffled. My truck was quieter, by a fair margin!

I don't plan on modifying the exhaust on my 123 just for the heck of it, but if I ever need to replace it, I'll just go for a straight exhaust...no harm and may even pick up a horsepower or two
