Torque and thrust links on 87 300D
Finished putting the thrust and torque links on the right rear of the 300D tonight.
Not too bad, other than poor access -- have to use too 19mm box ends on the torque link inner bolt, as it isn't possible to get a 1/2" drive ratchet in there with my extensions. Slow, but not terrible. New links are from the W140, I think, heavier than the original, and use different fasteners, see FastLane for details -- they list the part numbers. I couldn't get the rotor off, so had my brother ream the torque link to fit the original bolt, as I couldn't get the new one in, too long (the head is longer, couldn't get it around the backing plate). Other than that, pretty easy once I figured out the new bolts. There is a sleeve that fits into the wheel carrier so the new smaller diameter bolt fits (this info is partially in the manual, but it's vague). Cured the "kick" torque steer problem I've had, will test drive it tonight on a twisty road just for fun. Did discover I definitely need new subframe mounts, and I've aquired an oil leak on the right front of the engine (head gasket?) Peter
