Here are a couple of shots of my installed hood pad.

Please forgive the round haze in the center of all my pictures now from the water spot inside my camera lens.

It fell in a pond last weekend hiking. I took it apart, wiped and sprayed with compressed air and then left it to dry for two days. Put it back together and it worked perfectly except for that one MAJOR FLAW. Hope the lens isn't sealed...I'm going back in.

BTW, can you believe the image on the left is the exact same size as the one on the right?

I used 3M Hi-Strengh 90 Spray Adhesive to install the new hood pad on my '83 240D with very good results following the instructions on the can.

I remove the hood from the car to install the pad.

That's kinda what I was thinking regarding my 300D. Am I missing anything other than some noise reduction?

There is some noise reduction. It only takes about 30 min to do the job. I used a can of 3M 77 I had sitting around, but the pad fell off after 1 day. I re-attached it with the 8090 and it worked much better.

Noise reduction is the main benefit, plus there's some heat resistance which can help protect the paint. I've used Liquid Nails for at least four new W124 hood pads and so far, they've all been holding fine. It takes about 3 tubes total.

It's a piece of cake, I've done both mine with 3M 8090. I did one by myself, the other with my 10 year old daughter's "help," with the hoods still on the car (straight up). I used some tape to keep the first side in place while I worked on the other side, about a 20 minute job.

I did mine with the hood vertical too. I stood on the inner fenders straddling the engine to spray the hood and stock the pad on. Make sure you have a helper to hand the pad up to you and make sure you test fit it before using the glue and mark a reference point on the top and bottom.

Thanks for posting your experiences of hood pad installation. I'm heading out to get some 3M 8090 adhesive and put mine on this morning.

Definitely on my "to do" list - just have the remains of the old pad on mine to remove. Oh, why the square cut-out over the air cleaner area - clearance or....

The 77 spray is not suited for the hood pad. I used 8090 and also had superior results, and didn't even have to go crazy cleaning the hood - just get the major crap off and use plenty of spray. You can see the difference when it comes out of the can, it's a much thicker and heavier duty product, at least by the looks of it.

It's a foil heat deflector for the turbo cars, there is a cheaper pad with no deflector for N/A MBs.

I'm thinking about doing this over the long weekend--but temperatures are supposed to be in the low 40's. There isn't any temperature guideline on the 8090 can for spraying, does the ambient temperature matter? I assume it might affect the drying time but that's not a real big deal.

i thought id resurrect rather then start a new thread on a discussed topic:

on sat my hood hinge broke so i pulled my hood off and though while waiting on a new/used to to be shipped to me id go ahead and install the hood pad i ordered a few months back and dreaded. i used my angle grinder with a wire wheel and wire cup to remove the old adhesive and pad bits... worked well and quickly. vacumed and wiped down with laquer thinner and set out to find the 8090 adhesive the only stores with 8090 around me were NAPA @ $20 A CAN, and pepboys @ $16 a can... each store had 1 and this was yesterday on sunday so i bought both. went out this AM and used the 8090 in thirds (used hood ribs as guide) after laying it out to be sure it would fit properly. i sprayed all but the outer 3" or so of the pad with the contact cement and stuck it down in sections. then i spread the "yellow dealth" aka super weatherstip adhesive around the edges so i could glue it and slip the end under the metal something the spray contact cement wouldnt have allowed. hopefully it holds.

in retrospect i should have used the liquid nails as someone had suggested, its cheaper and it would have held it too. all in all i used 1 can of the 8090 and 2 tubes of the "yellow dealth" and a few pairs of rubber gloves. so about $35 in adhesives

I used only one can of 3M 8090. Six years ago; still holding tight.
