240-D Engine Replacement
I have a non-turbo 1977 123 series 240D (616912) with manual gear (4-speed) and would like to replace the engine with 300D (617912) engine again with a non-turbo engine.
Could anyone kindly guide me if I have to replace the gearbox and the differential as well? If I also replace the 4-speed manual gearbox with a 5-speed manual gearbox, do I need to replace the differential as well? Thanks |

I may not be aware of all the different parts but,
The diff ratios are different Driveshaft length(?) I think transmissions are the same. you might do some searching on Auto to manual tranmission changes. This is make the 617.912 quite nice. Someone here will know more=) Michael

You are gonna want the taller final drive for running highways at 80+ mph and best appreciate the car, otherwise driveshafts are the same.
Is the 300D 5 spd. transplant engine complete as single unit, or are you mixing 300D with 'found' 5 spd. tranny? If the 300D engine came from automatic, you've got flywheel/clutch to contend with, irregardless if you use the 4spd. or 5spd. tranny.
