1991, 190E. Transmission kick shifting up.

Howdy all,
1991, 190E. The transmission had a definite firm shift. I found that I really had to let up on the accelerator pedal to get a smoother shift. I thought the firm shift is common in Mercedes."it kicks the whole car forward" but smooth when shifiting down? Does anyone know why the transmission shifts with a kick?
Or if there is a product or something I can adjust to help smooth the shifting.
Thanks in advance.
