I thought only VoltageReg/Brushes could fail on Alternator? (83 240D/85 300D)
Gentlemen:
Both alternators failed on my 83 240 D and 85 300D.and replacing the Voltage Regulator/Brush pack did not solve the problem. I tried and I am still getting a limp 12.1 volts at the battery vice 14,5 expected, So I am assuming the stator or commutator went bad. Arent the stator and commutator relatively infinite life components? Does this mean i shoul djust replace th entire alternator? What failed? Both cars are 300K mileage vehicles. Nothing has an infinite life on a car!
The wiring in the stator and rotor is subject to heat, vibration, damp, etc. Eventually something will fail. It is often the tails on the rotor that connect to the commutator, but the insultation or the wire itself can fail anywhere.

It is not uncommon to see the need to replace the alternator. If this is necessary, buy a good one, not a chain store rebuilt.
Before buying an alternator, however, check the two heavy spade lug connectors and the wiring between the alternator and battery connection which is I believe on the starter post. I had this happen before and I simply repaired the connector. Good luck, |
