Mercedes used engine oil for a year or two in manual transmissions - then returned to ATF (which IS somewhat superior, but most of e=what's available in the US is a little too viscous). Mobil 1 ATF shifts better than ANYTHING else I've ever tried, but I've never tried 5W30 or 10W30 Mobil 1 engine oil.

What I posted in the way of Trans/Hyraulic fluid shows a weight of 10W-20. It's a clear almost odorless fluid.
I'm not saying its the right thing to use - but it is used in transmissions and its not the same thing as gear oil. Thought it would make for some interesting discussion. Nobody disagrees that the 240D is just a fancy tractor? Ken300D

I have been using Mobil-I tranny fluids for quite sometime, on my MB vehicles as well as other vehicles which use gear oil for transmission. I have also tried using synthetic tranny fluids from other manufacturers but have always come back to Mobil-I. On my MB vehicles I use Mobil-I ATF in the tranny and Mobil-I gear oil in the diffs and can tell you that the shifting and general noise level is quite low compared to other oils.
The Honda Accord 5 speed I own uses regular oil for its tranny so I use Mobil-I 0W-50 and the shifting is fantastic. I have over 450,000 miles on the Honda and the tranny and engine still runs like new, a testimony to the efficacy of Mobil-I in general. With my Gurkha I have done rough terrains under 55C weather as well as -25C and Mobil-I never falterred anywhere. My tranny and differential are as good as new. |
