I just did a search on this forum but couldn't find an answer to this. This weekend I did pro-active maintenance to my friend's 300 TDT. He wants it to run with few problems over the winter. ALL PARTS USED ARE OE MB PARTS. I replaced the fan belts, water pump, expansion tank cap, thermostat, upper and lower hoses, refilled w/MB coolant. The radiator is about three-years old. The thermostat and hoses were VERY old. Prior to doing all of this, his temp. gauge always read dead center (horizontal) or just slightly above if climbing etc.
After doing these major improvements, his engine temp. now reads upwards of 100 degrees celsius. Oftentimes up in the 110 to 120 - almost in the red area. I can't figure this out. The thermostat is installed correctly with the arrow up (why isn't there a tiny bleed screw/hole?). I drove it around town, on the highway @ 65 mph - nothing, no improvement, still almost 120 degrees. How can it be running worse now? I assume it's airlocked/has a huge air bubble somewhere in it. The upper hose was gurgling for a few minutes after shutting the engine off. If it is airlocked, how do you remedy this? I filled the coolant with the front of the car 12 inches off the ground too. The engine has since cooled down overnight and still no improvement this morning. Are airlocks this stubborn???
