hang-on heaters
Hey all.
Looking forward to my first diesel car winter, and wondering about cold starting. I know Atlanta isn't supposed to get "that cold" but I guess I'm a Boy Scout. I wanna be preparred! Niether of my diesels has a block heater. I have seen people mention water heaters and dipstick heaters. Are there any other "hang-ons" out there? Which of these is "best" for occasional use, like maybe once or twice a winter? Thanks! kma

kashbaugh,
Its possible you have the block heater in your engine but the wires are not connected to them. Check this first. If the heaters are in the engines, you can just hook the 120 volt wires to them. Do a search. Not long ago someone had a post about connecting the wires to the block heater. P E H |

I figured no wires just indicated no heater! I thought about installing block heaters and read up on it some, then changed my mind.
So I just look at the freeze plug behind the starter? If it has a heater is there some kind of connector and just a flat plate otherwise? thx, kma

I live in MN and have found that the dipstick heaters mainly just thin the oil..which is good...but not nearly as good as a block heater.
The magnetic heaters do the same unless you can find a flat spot on the block itself to attach them..in which case they transfer some heat to the block...but still nowhere near as good as a block heater. If you really want to be prepared for cold weather starting...and I can't hardly believe that you will need to heat the engine in Atlanta...have a block heater installed. But first ..like a previous poster suggested the actual blockheater may be there even though the plug in cord is not. The cords are probably not available separatly though. Maybe you can go to the junkyard and find one though..they seem to have the same configuration for all block heaters from what I have seen. Dana
