Someone checked Carfax and said it showed 100K miles and Ohio registry in 2001.

This really ticks me off. The car looks good enough that some poor soul will believe the mileage to be accurate - it sure fooled me, until I checked the other thread and read about the Carfax report. Maybe we can help out and email everyone who bid, and inform them of this discrepancy.

What a scam! On the headrest issue, I have an original '81 300SD identical (even with the euro headlights) to the one shown with factory rear headrest.

Regarding Carfax

Maby this car is too good to be true.

But I have doubts about Carfax itself. Is it really accurate enough to be completely trusted? On some occasions in the past I've used it it has given ridiculously incorrect results. Claiming that a 84 300SD was an 89 560SEL for example.

Where do they get their info? Who inputs it? How do they verifiy it's accuracy?

I got a reply e-mail from him:

Try reporting this to carfax, cause the info they have is wrong! I will be getting a notarize statement from the original owner saying that the mile are true and not rolled back!
Thanks!
Charles

If this is true, can we really trust carfax anymore and is this SD really worth $13,000?

I had a 1989 Jag XJS that I was selling with 33,000 original miles from my grandfather, original owner.

I was so upset when I ran a carfax, because, firstly, it said it had 4 owners!

This is not true, it simply had the names on the registration changed three times, for insurance, divorce, and other reasons.

And secondly, it showed a 50,000 mile odometer rollback. Some crappy smog shop in Sacramento reported it having 76,000 miles on it in 1998. The shop messed up.

My carfax report was tainted. And it is fairly hard to challenge these things.

And another story. I crashed my 190 about a year ago. An accident report was filed. Carfax still shows the vehicle as accident free. So in this case, carfax missed a real, serious event.

I dont trust carfax too much... but it can help guide you in the right direction.

It's Value

I dont know wether or not carfax can be trusted. As I posted above I've seen some ridiculous results from it in the past. Assuming the car is as described it's a good question as to it's value.

I paid 14 thousand dollars for a thoroughly unpleasant piece of brand new Korean crap last year. Had this been available, and assuming the validity of the sellers claim, if I had been able to raise the money I believe I'd have jumped at it.

No way is it worth that much. We bought my wife's 77 300d two years ago with less than 50k miles from the original owner. It was $4500. Granted it is not an SD nor is it a turbo, but even adding those things on, I would not pay 13k

I would also be very skeptical about this mileage. What you need to check is not the veracity of the car itself but the seller. It doesn't sound as if the seller is the original owner. In those circumstances I would be very skeptical about the mileage. He even admits there is a problem with the odometer. Since the odometers fail rather regularly on these cars, it would be no surprise if someone replaced the odometers after 2001 and it has racked up the miles on the new odometer since then.

I got another email from the seller:

Hello Lance,
Just wanted to let you know that I received a notarized statement from the original owner testing to the fact that the miles on the odometer are true and correct! I hope this will let you sleep well tonight, knowing that I am not a liar and a thief on this auction. I know I will not loose any over this matter, cause I would not try to sell something that was not the real McCoy. As soon as I found out about this, I look into it to verify what the fact were, had I found that it was true and the miles were wrong, I would have CLOSED the sale down! But the facts did not support it! So let the sale go on!!!
Thanks
Charles

I am still skeptical about his claims. The only thing that would convince me is I would like to see the speedometer to see if the screws still have their seals on them. Even then, it could still be a different speedo than the origional.

What's with the white heavy gauge speaker wire running from the battery to what looks like the front of the car? Fan hotwired?

Yea gads! I have a gold 81 SD I paid 1600 dollars for and after replacing the usual age worn rubber parts have a very reliable car. Other than its nice finish I don't think I'd want a car that had only been run a little over a thousand miles a year, not for that kind of money. Rear head rest in an 81 SD? I have Mer Tex seats in mine ,but were those style seats when in leather used in an 81 SD? My 86 126 has leather seats with rear head rest of that style I think something is not right about that car .........

No, the seats are the correct style - same in all W126 from 1981 to 1988. Rear headrests were optional in 1981 to 1985 W126's, as they were on W123's. Rare though.

Two thoughts:

1. Kerry is right about MB odometers. If the trip odometer got messed with, then it is very possible that main one has mal-functioned. These things are so easy to mess with. Mine was down for 1.5 years on our first '84 so I took out the odo and put a drill on it and brought it up to 228k from 201k. I assume that others do the opposite just as easily.

2. For the life of me, I can't figure out why "low miles" attracts a huge price. This would be true of a 'piece of junk' domestic, but our MB diesels are more like coach busses. Way, way overbuilt in comparison. As for me, I'm skeptical of buying one without 200k on it. Just don't trust whether or not its a good car until then.

My favorite oil comercial on TV is the 'high mileage' one. You know, the one that says if you have over 75k, then you need the 'high mileage oil'. What a joke. Thats not high mileage.... sigh
