transmission shifting is hard
I have a 1983 MB300 turbo deisel. It has an automatic transmission that shifts hard from first to second. Is this normal? Several people I have spoken with say this is typical but I don't agree. Oh, it has 124,000 miles if that makes a difference.

Check the vacuum system for leaks -- the 617 has a vac amplifier and a controlled leak system to supply a vac signal to the modulator on the tranny for shift feel, and if you have low vac on the modulator for some reason, you will get hard shifts.
If you drive hard, with your foot down pretty hard at the upshift point, a very firm shift is normal. It's much worse if you floor it through the kickdown switch on takeoff, then lift your foot to upshift! Peter

Mine does it as well at 219,600 miles and there are no vacuum leaks. I've just learned to live with it.

Same outcome here. All shifts are fairly firm (Buy not harsh) with the 1-2 always with a good thump. 3-4 is smooth vs. all others. 4-3 is VERY hard with a strong clunk when slowing down.
