sorry another gas pedal question

I have some play in my pedal, it travels about an inch before it does anything. is this normal? if not can it be fixed by adjusting the visible linkages? oh and i do not have a bowden tube, the inability to down shift automatically does not bother me, but will it cause any damage if i leave it the way it is?
thank you very much
will

Get someone to mash the throttle while you are watching under the hood. Try to find the loose movement. It is usually at the rubber piece closest to the firewall. Make sure you keep the "ball joints" of the throttle linkage properly lubed.
