Reverse Lamp

I have a problem with one of my reverse lamps. It's on the driver's side. The bulb is not burned out, but it will not come on when put into reverse. I tried replacing it, with no change.I don't know if this will be any help, but a few years back after an accident, the light assembly that holds the bulbs was replaced with a Euro version. I was able to determine that due to the extra bulb for the rear fog light and the absence of the side running light. So does anyone know what might be causing this problem? It just affects the reverse bulb, no others.

Are you using a bulb with a chrome plated metal body or the typical "Wally world" bare copper body? I have had much better luck with the chrome style bulb in both US and European vehicles. Even rice burners seem to like the chromed ones bitte. Few more cents, but worth it.

If you can pull the whole part of the assembly that holds the bulb out of the lens frame you might find the bulb isn't properly contacting the connectors. They might just be really dirty and corroded (caused by exhaust?) or have become loose or something. It happened to mine...

Check the wiring and see if the connections within the assembly are not still set up for that bulb to be the fog light. Wouldn't it be a kick if you turned the light switch on, pulled out two? clicks, and it came on?

When I first bought my Benz I found the taillight assembly somewhat confusing. I ended up labeling each bulb in the assembly to help in the future. Do you get 12v at the reverse lamp socket?

Ok, it just started working again, all by itself. I don't know what caused it. I think I'll take a trip to the pick and pull to find a U.S .light assembly. Maybe that Euro one has something to do with it. Now the rear running light below the brake light went out. I don't know if it's one of those "phantom burn outs" again or simply a burnt out bulb. I'll check it tommorow.

Take the bulbs out and clean all the bulbs and sockets. Sometimes the problem you describe is caused by 20 years worth of dirt.

A diesel can be particularly bad about sooting up the rear lites. Would second Palangi's suggestion.

Is there any particular cleaner or material to use when cleaning electrical components such as sockets, lights, and plugs?

I have successfully used WD-40 to cut the krud, then wiped the parts completely dry with a towel.

It depends on the shape and material. The lead button on bottom of the lamp can be cleaned with a file. The lamp body and other contacts can be cleaned with 320 to 600 grit paper. If possible, stiffen the spring tension.

I tried using WD-40, and new bulbs. Both didn't work. I think it's the wiring. I'm going to the pick and pull to look for a US spec light assembly so I can have that rear side light on again. Has anyone ever been to one in Houston? I think it's on N. Shepherd.
