So with much thanks to Jim (engatwork) I went down to Macon, GA to buy the '87 300SDL he had mentioned on the board.
I'm really happy with it so far. so happy I went and took some pictures as the sun was setting. they are crappy, but this one is ok- clearly displaying the bloated trap oxidizer on the left.

I'll put up some more pics when I can get some in the daylight! Or maybe I'll put some of the crappy ones up anyway!

Looks pretty good. Makes you wonder what they gave the poor guy on trade-in.

Get the trap/turbo changed out under the MB recall, then throw it up on EBay. Repeat the process a few times. You'll be in an S600 in no time.

they said they gave the owner $1500. I gave them that much, and drove it home. never thought I'd consider buying anything from a dealer again, but the price was too good to pass up.
ebay will probably be the destination for my volvo wagon... this car is a keeper.
I took it to my independent mechanic and he guessed I would have spent $5000 for it. His face was clear disbelief when I told him the price. I finally got a deal (knock on wood)!

That may or may not be a trap oxidizer. Any dealer will run the VIN and tell you if it's been changed out. The thing they put in it's place looks just like that. I know, I have one, and mine has been changed.

There's no doubt about it, that's a trap oxidizer.

That sure looks like the Trap oxidizer to me.
If the turbo is bad, a new turbo goes with the deal.

The thing that replaces the trap looks the same, at least that's what the dealer told me when I took my CD in.

May be but it goes in the exhaust system aft of the turbo and under the car. See previous PICs in this thread.

On my car (300CD, CA version) it's located under the turbo, it's hidden. When I went in the dealer ran the VIN and wrote down the number on the trap thingy. He returned with a printout and said that the part number was for a soot something and that the trap was replaced.

I'm glad someone on here got the car. When I went to check it out I could not stand the thought that it may end up on the auction block. If I was not already back up to three Mercedes it would have been at my house
