I'm back......

.....home from a day spent going nuts. First, I had to get the Rhino Liner installed on the Dodge truck. Looks great. Next was to go pick up the 84 Eurospec 240D. Car runs great, used no oil on its trip home, and now sits in the ole driveway.

Pictures of the new "baby" follow, beginning with the front driver side shot......

From the back, notice the lack of a "diesel" emblem.

What is the rest of the story ?
How much did you give for it ?
How far was the trip home?

I think we have evidence now that you are spending more time out getting cars for your collection than riding that nice little tractor cutting grass... LOL

Cloth interior, a bit dirty after 19 years of service. Hopefully it'll come nice and clean....

The genuine 5 speed shifter. Why were we in the US denied this jewel of a tranny?

Finally, no photo op of an MB diesel is complete without the requisite engine compartment photograph. One oddity that I've noticed is that this car has not manual shutoff.

I gave him the $2200. I already knew that this number was his rock bottom. It was more than I really wanted to spend, but the car's condition and rarity just doesn't give him any competition. He also knew what he had. His original asking was $2550, so he did wiggle a bit. He got two more calls on the car while waiting on me to come back with the money, so he was not at any loss for buyers.

My trip home was about 70 miles, the temp guage varied from ~ 85c to 100c on the trip home, never going above 100c. The 5 speed tranny is definitely geared to the autobahn. Any speed under 55 mph really lugs the engine in 5th. Digging into the throttle to pull hills in 5th would cause the temp guage to rise a bit, untill the hill was crested, and the extra power wasn't needed. Dropping to fourth didn't seem to change much on the temp guage. I don't see any immediate indications of cooling issues. The oil guage rides at 2.5 bar at idle when warm, and there is very little smoke under acceleration according to my neighbour who followed me home.

I'll basically be replacing the instrument cluster with the one out of the 80 240D The odometer is inop (knew this going in), and the clock is dead as well.

I've already fixed one thing. There was a burned out bulb on the brake light. It now functions correctly.

I just about died laughing at your mowing comment. Words don't describe how much I hate to mow grass. That's partially why I live in the country - nobody cares.

LOL, True to some extent on the grass.... we keep ours very low because SNAKES LIKE TALL GRASS... and we hate SNAKES more than we hate mowing grass.....

One word----'Roundup ultra'.... LOL... but get it in the 2.5 gallon concentrate container... only about $125... and will makes amazing amount of spray with NO Residual action on the ground.

So , overall.... are you impressed with the 5 speed... or would the rear axle ratio need to be changed to give you the feel you were expecting ?

Would the 5 cylinder and the 5 speed still be the 'cat's meow' ?

I like it alot. It really transforms the car from the screamers that the 4 speeds are famous for to a VERY relaxed highway cruiser. I'll have to keep an eye on my speed during highway trips as this car will easily creep up to ticket range without any drama.

I'm really not sure what axle ratio this car has. It does feel like it's geared quite tall, presumably to make high speed runs easier on the ears. I'm hoping that this translates to much above the average 240D fuel economy figures. I'll be making sure to post the numbers once I have a working odometer in the car. The only tradeoff that I can see is that the car definitely feels like it works harder getting going. Then again, I didn't buy the car to go fast. I just wanted to be back in a good ole' MB diesel again - and it feels GREAT!!

Oh yeah, one can never have too much power. A Eurospec 5 cylinder 5 speed manual would simply be icing on the cake. If you find one, snag it.

Congrats Brian. That's a sweet looking old Benz.

First thing I noticed was the right hand mirror, I think that's not real common on a 240D.

If you give me the first 6 digits, I can look up the axle ratio.

Yeppers, I need a right hand mirror on the 75. I keep looking over there and it isn't there. I wonder if a 123 mirror would fit on a 115? Can't seem to find on off a 115?

By the way, when is the next Texas GTG? What happened to Galveston??

Don't replace the speedo. The shaft that holds the odometer gears is easy to fix. PM me and I can try to explain it to you or we exchange phone #'s and I can talk you through it.

Paul, I don't think they are interchangeable from 115 to 123 because of the way they are described on Ebay... not sure though..
I was too busy on farm stuff at the time a committment would have had to be made for the park ... Galveston was TxBill's Idea I think... I don't like sand and salt water myself... and I could not do the cooking for one there....

First thing I noticed was the power steering filter ( I guess ) on the right fender wall. Wonder if that was a user modification?

What model is the Yanmar? I have a YM1700 that's very handy.
