Automatic Tranny Oil Change

Hello

I need some step-by-step instructions on how to do an oil and filter change on 79 300D automatic tranny!

What would be the best oil I can put in that I can get in Canada for that extended drain life because my haynes manual calls for 30 000mi oil and filter change I think that is too often.

I hear that when doing this oilchange one should drain the torque converter too! but how do you fill one up?

Thanks

Mario

Try a search to start with. Mobil 1 synthetic is good for what you want I think. Torque converter fills itself when running. After drain put about 3-4 quarts back in and start and allow to idle.... shift to drive reverse etc. and then carefully add enough until full but don't overfill.... all while running.

You will need a 5mm hex head (allen wrench). The transmissionpan has a drain plug. Loosen that and let her drain. Remove bolts to pan, remove filter. Install new filter and put the transmission pan back on after you have thoroughly cleaned it out. Make sure there is no lint or dirt or anything in the pan. For the converter, there is a access hole in the bell housing of the trans. If the drain plug for the converter isn't lined up, crank the engine over with the starter to bring the drainplug around. Drain the converter. To fill the tranny, do as Wasuchi said. Don't over tighten the trans. pan bolts. They are not meant to be tightened too much.

Be sure not to overtighten the transmission pan bolts. Too much torque and the rubber gasket will split and leak all your nice Mobil 1 on the ground.

Just to really stress this point DON'T overtighten the pan bolts! This has been an issue for many people, I think they are supposed to be 11 ft/lbs???? (Too lazy to look it up) Does that sound familiar guys? Anyway, it ain't much and people overtighten them and then it leaks. Good luck, have fun, and take your time.

yeah ill besure to take it easy on to bolts...thanks for the tips

I would hate to break the bolt AGAIN... I did that as I was changing my waterpump I broke one of the bolts...after about 45minutes of cursing and throwing wrenches I managed to get it out by tapping at the edge that was sticking out with a sharp screwdriwer and little hammer and lot's of wd40
