ttt, tlj etc

Not a Mercedes, but I've had three Peugeot diesels and used Penzoil Long Life SAE30 single weight, in the engine and transmission.

Delvac 1 for synthetic and Delo 400 for dino:) and you won't go wrong. It is up to you whether you want synthetic $$ or dino:). But the KEY thing is what LB used to say all the time? Change it HOT/OFTEN.

I use Amsoil 15/40, got started on it when I bought my daugthers 240D . The PO had used it since 40K on the car. The engine at 120K was in remarkable shape and still is.

I just bought 4, 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 15-50 @ $22.62 ea. plus tax.
I have been using Castrol 20-50 for about 12 years in the 80 300SD, with no problems (changed at 2k-2.5k miles). Found this site, which is great, and find I am using the wrong oil.
Have two deisel Mercedes, after reading, searching and researching on here thought that would be the way to go.
Maybe I should have went Delo 400 15-40, a whole lot less cost.
Thanx for the help all

You still gonna be using the wrong oil.. The Mobile 1 for diesels is Delvac 1 - made by Mobile:);).

I love an oil thread in the winter:).

leathermang 12-06-2003 04:49 PM

Well, I guess we could start up an Air Conditioning replacement for R12 thread in the winter too....Usually we have switched to glowplugs and block heaters by now....

If you use synthetics, Delvac-1 is about the best diesel synthetic you can possibly buy, with Amsoil 15W-40 in second place, and Mobil-1 15W-50 in third place (all are EXCELLENT oils). But you DO NOT want to use SynTec, Rotella Syn, or Delo Syn - these are not true synthetics (but probably better than dino oil).

For dino oils, Delvac-1300 and Delo-400 are probably the best - Rotella is nothing special. Biggest thing is to make sure you are using diesel rated (CH, CH, CI, etc) oil! Very few 20W-50 oils are diesel rated, and not all that many 10W-40's or straight 30's are either. This is the most important item - if it's not Cx rated, it can't suspend the soot properly, and you'll get excessive engine wear.

For the record, I use Delvac-1 and very strongly support using full-synthetic oils in almost all vehicles, with extended drain intervals, based on the results of oil analysis (which is 10-15kmi for my cars).

YMMV, etc. Now can we close this thread before it swells into a 10-page oil war like all the previous threads did? :D
