1/2 Delvac 1 5w-40
1/2 delvac 1300 15w-40

Delvac 1300 has a bit of moly, delvac 1 keeps stuff slean, both are compatible mobil products using the same additive packages, so there is no chance of additive clash.

I have tried allthe oils, I have found that delo 400 and rotella give the worst MPG. Pennzoil longlife and delvac 1300 arent much better. Delvac 1 gives reproducible 29-31 MPG (vs 27-28 with the others), but is quite expensive. Doing the mix gives reproducible 29-30, and works great in my 83 300D.

For Dino oil I would just like to add the Gulf SAE40 XDMO turbo approved oil to the list, off all the Dino oils I have used, this one remians stable even after hard driving under 50c weather with my OM 616 turbo. Otherwise Delvac-1 synthetic rules if one can afford it.

delo 400. cause it was the only jug of diesel rated oil at the little hill billy podunck town that my parents live in where ichanged my oil last. anyway i have no clue waht to look for as far as oil performance goes:confused:

Did anyone try Walmart and Autozone brands diesel rated oil? They seems to work OK......???

gsxr 01-03-2004 08:41 PM

On a budget, any Cx (CF, CG, CH, CI, etc) rated oil will be fine. I'd make sure to change it by 4-5kmi though!

:)

Compared to Rotella in my 84 300SD, running Walmart oil seems to give my engine a little more horsepower. I noticed the same thing with Walmart oil in my 89 Pontiac Grand Prix. Isn't Walmart oil made my Quaker State?

Just clarifying.. you do 50/50 split of 5w-40 and 15w-40

Interesting...

Right. So what weight do you end up with, 10W40?

Delvac 1 around here is $23/gallon. Delvac 1300 is $6/gallon. That's about $30 for oil per change compared to a full-synth change for $46-48 for oil. $16-18 more for synth oil that you get the benefit of 5 weight winter oil that starts easy and pumps up fast. Save $16-18 and still get "most" of the bennies. Seems like ALL the parts decisions with these damn things!

France, Italy and Germany

We were visiting friends over the yuletide holidays and found out that the preferred diesel oil there is Castrol RX Super 15W40. Diesel taxicabs uses it.

Is this oil brand and weight hard to find in the US?

gsxr 01-04-2004 10:13 PM

Castrol SynTec? **shudder** I bet it's "preferred" because it's cheap. And it's cheap because it's a Group III base stock, which is called "synthetic" by Castrol even though it isn't. I've never seen SynTec in a 15W-40 weight in the USA. If you're on a budget, use Delo 400 or Delvac 1300 and change it often. Otherwise stick with Mobil/Amsoil/RedLine synthetics, not Castrol/Valvoline/Shell etc...

;)

JHZR2 01-04-2004 11:27 PM

Yes, 5w-40 and 15w-40 mix is what I use... As I have stated, I find that I get the MPG increase of 100% Delvac 1, with less cost.

As for castrol syntec being preferred in europe... Thats for good reason. The syntec sold in europe is a FAR superior oil. Syntec sold in the USA is group III, which isnt really synthetic at all, but can use the name by technicality. The Group IV/V synthetic syntec oils sold in europe is great stuff, and really protects well, certainly on par with Mobil 1 and delvac 1.

Note, you can get a sample of the europeaqn syntec if you find the 0w-30 syntec sold in autozone. It MUST be in a black bottle with red lettering on it, and MUST say 'made in germany' on the back. It actually has a greenish color to it, almost like antifreeze. Protects great, I use it in my truck... Might be ok for newer diesels as well, as it is nearly a 40wt, becuase it is pretty viscous.

My mistake, it is Castrol RX Super 15W40 and not Castrol Syntec.

JHZR2:
Yes, the Castrol Syntec bottle I saw in Italy is in a black with red label container.

redbaronph123 01-05-2004 05:07 AM

delo gold (sae40).. used to be delo500

by the way i live in the Philippines.. so you might this product under a different name...

Mercedes Man 01-05-2004 11:42 AM

redbaronph123,

My favorite diesel oil in the Philippines is Caltex Delo 500 (SAE 40). I see that they have changed the name. I have not found it in the USA. It were here, it would be sold under the Texaco brand.
