1987 300TD Idler Pulley

I just received my 1987 300TD. I also noticed that the idley pulley does not seems to be inline with the rest. Do I need to repair this immediately?

Thanks,

Yes. It will beat the crap out of the front cover on the engine, usually punctures it at least once when it fails.

Easy fix, although you do need to remove the fan clutch and fan to get to it.

Don't wait.

Yes - Fix this IMMEDIATELY! You'll need a new lever arm, and possibly the idler pulley too - hard to tell until it's apart. Order the two plastic covers as well, they WILL break when you remove them, new ones are a buck each. If you need a new belt shock, only order the OE "Genuine Mercedes" shock from Caliber, Rusty, or Fast Lane (make sure they do NOT sell you the aftermarket one for half as much). There's a reason the OE shock costs twice as much - it lasts four times longer! Oh yeah - get a new belt too.

Last note: Removal of the fan & clutch is a three minute process with the correct tools, or an hour+ of swearing and scraped knuckles without them. Your choice. Photos of the tools are here:

You can use an 8mm allen with cheater bar and a 4mm allen to lock the clutch, no sweat. I've done it twice now. The factory tools are nicer, no question (I've used those, too), but you can aquire the allens at Sears tomorrow.

I replaced the idler lever, pulley, spring and belt (shock still seemed good). Total cost was about $160 in parts from Rusty. It was tight to get the new lever in. I could only turn the 12 mm allen bolt 1/4 turn each time. Same true for the 6 mm pulley bolt, but I did it. All without removing the fan just loosening the plastic cowling. If anyone tries this, remember how to put the belt back on. It looks like it can go many ways, but only one way fits.

Next time if I have the time to get the tool, I will remove the fan. This time I could not wait for the right tool.

Attached is a picture of the new parts installed. Notice they are all inline.
