$800 83 300D Turbo

I might try to spring this thing free (but put me in the poor house).... here is what I have been told.

1. Passenger side dent
2. Knock in engine on one cylinder
3. drives fine

sooooo.. what do I look for that will help me diagnose and get an idea of "is this worth it". I'm on a HUGELY tight budget.

For example..... what is a KNOCK like a rod issue and what is Nailing? etc.

Ill try to go see it tommorw.

Nailing sounds like a hammer nailing a nail, it has a crisp sharp sound to it. Bring a 17mm wrench with you and break each line loose, if you find the one which quiets it down then it is quite probable that cylinder needs a new injector.

Break loose where? At the top of the IP?

This will tell you which cylinder it is, but I believe it will quiet down a rod knock also. A mechanics stethescope might help to tell if the sound is high or low in the block.

I was sort of wondering that to, if it were more than the injector. I'd break it loose on the injector side.

I just called. They said they've had a lot of people look at it, but no takers yet. If I had the time, I would buy it just to part out. The 85 specific items like turbo and differential should make it worthwhile.

Coach, sorry I hijacked your thread. Let's try to get this thing back on track. Some things on general W123 condition to help you decide if the car is worth buying. Lift the carpets and look for moisture and rust in the floor pans. Check lower quarter panels for rust - pull out the trunk liners on the sides and check there too. Pay attention to how the transmission shifts. And at that price I'd surely expect no climate control. And as stated earlier, nailing will be up high in the engine, while a rod knock will be down low.

Well...... dont know if I bit a rotten bullet or stole something. He was asking 800 before TTT and was selling it as a parts car cause of a rod knock. I paid 650 prior to TTT. Since it was at a car lot I was able to split the payment into two payments. Yep.... Im cash poor, heck.. I'm everything poor!!!

More detail

. Color.... silver? its like a light blue but yet a silver. Hard to describe. Appears original and just needs oxidatoin removed and a shineing.
. Rust..... what rust. none... zilch... sweet... ok ok. one spot where paint is cracked around the pinky dent in the rear fender.
. dent..... Front fender near driver door and looks like it will pull out easy. Lot of it should come out with a suction cup type dent remover. Small pinky tip sized dent "outward" in rear fender. Something in the trunk caused it.
. Interior... needs a driver door opener handle and chrome surround piece. Might need some internal parts to open the door too. Rear Passenger Door handle needs a little help, Upposltry looks AWSOME. Does not even need a cleaning. Just a vacume, yet you could tell the little car lot had not cleaned it out. Dash has no cracks. Trim strip on the Glovebox needs reglueing. Lot owner, (young man actually) had been driving it around till the nailing started. Local hacks up the road at the tire change place are the one who said it sounded like a rod knocking.
. The opaque? plastic around the headlamps is all splintered up from sun. Driver front Amber fog light? needs replacing (lens broke).
. 188,000 miles
. it smokes white
. It sounds like a nailing to me. Nailing is only when RPM's are up.
. exhaust leak near front but it appears to be pipe not manifold related.
. old oil and muck around block ... but all the way around like V. cover gasket leak. Another words not greatly maintained but ok.
. Rubber parts of linkage looks good.
. No oil in antifreeze
. No water in oil
. lower oil cooler hose should be replaced. Both I guess.
. Alda is unaldterd with cap still on it
. Air filter looks good
. Not excessive oil in air cleaner.
. antena motor works
. Automatic
. prefilter is pretty black but OEM style. Has not been changed in a while I'm guessing.
. does not blow cold air
. Sunroof does not retract

yeah that looks sweat. I afeard I offered to much for the one I just bought. He took my $650 offer to easy.

One thing I liked though was the young guy didnt do the slick willy used car salesman thing. He just sounded like a good guy that happened to have a small lot of cars for sale.

I apologize for hijacking the thread, but just to spread the news: In the local paper there has been two 123 Diesel's for sale. The first is a 1982 300D, says good body, but needs fuel pump, asking $500. The second one is for a 1980 240D, needs transmisson work or good parts car. Navy Blue. Must sell. Ad first came out 12/05 asking $950, then 12/09 asking $800, then 12/11, asking $700..maybe if you wait a little more, you can take it for $100:p I haven't called about any of these cars, therefore I show no interest. If anybody wants any of the numbers just ask..back to the original thread.. Thanx

Coach,

Could be a real steal. Some Diesel Purge, a little snake oil for the tranny, might make it all right again. I like that these cars are so expensive to have someone else repair and not as well understood as a Chevy or Toyota. It makes for a lot of opportunities for those of us with tools and books.

When did you move to FLA, I thought you were an Ohio lad?

Jerry
