Thing I hate about people and my car is when they ask my what I drive. I'll say "a Mercedes", and then someone is always right there to say, yeah, but it's really old though. They make it a point to say that every time I state the fact that I drive a Mercedes. Oh well, I drive a Mercedes when he drives a '94 explorer that he thinks is so cool because it totalled my mom's Volvo that I always called indestructable. He only needed a new bumper while the wagon was totalled. He'll learn one day.

What a great thread....I think us MB owners need a support group :p
To paraphrase many posts....its not how much money you make, its how smart you are with the money you make! Lets face it, nowadays many spend as much on their fad-of-the-moment optioned-out domestic trucks, SUV's and luxo-boats as they would for a nearly-new, still under warranty Mercedes. It surprises me not that folks with the wisdom to choose MB also demonstrate savvy with business and real estate, even if its "just" a little fixer-upper or whatever. I'm often saddened to hear friends and aquaintences lament how much money they waste on schemes, poor investments and bad choices. With a little discipline, they could all drive a Mercedes

I bought my 1989 300SE on 11/17/2003 and my neighbors across the street won't even look at me. The ones next door asked me all kinds of questions. He just bought an Infinity G35 for around 35K and when I told him I paid only $5K for it, he said he could have bought 7 of them for what he paid. His G35 has a prop rod for the hood, a prop rod on a $35K car!
I do have front end work to do mind you, it's going BOING. Ball joint time I suspect. Bushings too.

Peter, it is always better when people envy you rather than if they feel sorry for you.

When I drive mine to school I don't think anyone will notice. My usual spot is behind a new Acura 3.2TL and in front of a new Volvo convertable. There are not to many MB at my high school maybe 2 W210's and an M class. Alot of BMW's and Acura's though. I don't understand why someones parents would buy them a 30k-40K dollar car for there first vehical. They also seem to total them in a year to, I guess they are lucky they are so safe.

Besides, who cares? You're driving a vehicle which would cost, in today's money, about $70 - $80K USD to replace. His truck wouldn't cost half of that in today's money. I wish I could drive a W116 up here. I am envious.

We're new to the neighborhood and only know both next door neighbors and the family across the street.
When people from down the block cruise by they always stare when I'm out in the yard. Must think I'm a drug dealer! Pit bull chomping at the bit, big blue 560 in the garage along side a mint '69 Caddy and various other rides in the drive. Oh yeah, and I look like I just got out of prison! |

In my current neghborhood, most of these people drive their Merc 4WD's, 560's, etc. so they wouldn't bat an eye at another mercedes parked at someone's house. Unless it's at THIS house!
As the neighborhood redneck who has all manner, color, orientation, etc. of friends showing up for help with; car repair, welding jeep frames, changing out tranny's, butchering/cleaning elk/deer/goose/dove/rabbit, having a caravan of humvee's show up with a load of returning vets ready to party now and then, county sheriff deputies, stopping by and walking in with their broken AR's and 1911's (NOT pointed at me BTW!) looking for repair, Halloween and Christmas parties that (usually) pack the streets, they've come to expect the "other side" of the street from me. When a mercedes "showed up" here (towed behind a Chevy 3/4 PU) they weren't astonished that I was towing something (normal), but that I was towing a "Mercedes" (very abby-normal). I'm sure more than a few wondered where I "stole it from". Now that it's up on wood stumps at all four corners, the neighborhood's back to normal! "Yep..., Tom's at it again, forget the property values!"

My Dad was went into straight-commision sales right after grad school (1957) until retiring a few years ago at age 65. While he never owned anything ostentatious, he drove a few Saabs, Audis etc. He had friends who owned Mercs, but he didn't want to drive one for fear of a client, or potential client, seeing him. In 1978, I was stationed in Germany and bought a '73 220D from an elderly gentleman for I think 3,000DM. It was a great car and the P.O. took great pride in showing me all the maintenance "stamps" at the proper intervals. When I left Germany in '79, I sold the car to Herr Stadtfeld, my landlord for the same amount. It was a four speed column shift. I always wanted another, so when, in '02, I spotted the '81 300D at MB Autowerks, I jumped on it. I feel fortunate that I did because, as some of you may remember from a previous post, it saved the lives of my two daughters and their two friends in an accident on I-85. I have bought two since then and my total expenditure is less than $7,000 for all three. I'm not a mechanic but I do enjoy doing my own maintenance and fixing things on the cars. I guess it has become a hobby. If I was rich I would take up golf and let someone else work on the cars.

One more thing. Speaking of Mercedes in the movies, i enjoyed the scene in the Robert DeNiro movie, RONIN, which used a big bronze, MB sedan, as the chase/getaway car. For more Mercedes in the movies, go to Google and do a search with the phrase "Mercedes in the movies." Enjoy.

If you REALLY want to make people hate you, do what I did. About four years ago I got a killer deal on a Cigarette boat. It was such a good deal I couldn't afford NOT to buy it. You can just image what people say about a guy who drives a Mercedes and then goes out on his Cigarette boat on the weekends. Oh well, people have never like me very much anyway.
