Stanadyne Purge

I read on this forum about the purge process of running cleaner through the fuel system straight out of the bottle. So, I ran a line from the Stanadyne can to the fuel filter (brand new filters) and the engine sucked about a gallon of Stanadyne through the pump, injectors, ...
Enormous difference. Nailing completely gone. Nozzles must have gotten cleaned out finally.

a gallon?

How much did it cost and where did you get it. I have only seen pint sizes, and those were in the trunk of a totalled 300D in SLC. I didn't notice much of a difference with adding it to the fuel tank.

Nailing = loud, metal on metal banging noise coming from near the injectors that is not regular valve rattle.

Stanadyne Diesel Fuel Conditioner
Performance Formula

Nailing sounds like a gnome with a ballpeen hammer is living int he front end of your engine block. He's pissed and is not shy about swinging the hammer.

The noise is the result of a timing issue most often caused by poor spray pattern from the injector nozzle. Can also be caused by streched timing chain or other Injector Pump timing issues. As gunk gathers in the injector nozzle of cylinder (bound to happen over 20 plus years of American diesel), spray pattern deteriorates and fuel/air combusts either too early or too late. As combusted fuel and air are expanding, the related moving parts are going in the wrong direction. The resulting slap of parts getting blasted a bit backwards is a bad sound.

As you may have realized, I am not technically proficient regarding the innards of the engine. What I am certain of is that the angry little dwarf is either gone, asleep or disarmed. And this bucket sounds really, really nice.

Moraine, I get the stuff in 5 gal. cans and decided to run it straight through as a last resort before pulling nozzles. Lazy guesswork triumphs once again! These little victories do make life easier but they leave me feeling somewhat uneasy that a just and fair cosmos would allow me to get away with stuff like this...

Biodiesel is definitely one of my favorite distractions of all times. How we are not all running these buckets on used french fry oil is an absolute testament to how likely we are to run this planet into the ground.

Can't actually run the planet into the ground, I guess...

Mccan, where in NJ did you get this stuff, and what does it cost? I haven't gone to the link yet, so maybe my questions will be answered there.

Rick, I get it at a diesel shop in Somerville. Next time I'm by there I'll get the number and post it. I pay about $50 for 5 gal. can.

Re: Stanadyne Purge

Do you mean to say that the cleaner solution actually burns just like diesel would, so that the engine keeps running, sucking the cleaner out of a can, and no drop of diesel fuel? I have the same nagging nailing sound every now and then, the mechanic at MB had the injectors removed, said they had a nice spray pattern and that they contained pressure well, no drops. Could a purge help here also to get rid of the sounds? Naturally, it should do no harm, but would it actually be of any real improvement?

Stanadyne

http://www.stanadyne.com/dsg/dsg_search.asp

there is the link to the web site dealer locator...

I have done the same procedure with Diesel Purge and the results are great...

Do a search for diesel purge and there will be some very detailed instructions
