Lights in Climate Conrol Unit

'87 300D, It would be nice to actually see the climate control unit at night! I took the wood off and saw the two pieces of silver tape that hide the bulbs, but could not get them out. It looks like the face plate comes off but that would not budge either. Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Joe

I don't know how its done either. Maybe a special MB tool?

When it happens to me I'm going to try that rubber shrink tubing that is used to insulate electrical splices - try to find some that will just push over the bulb and then grab the bulb when pulled.

The alternative would seem to be removal and disassembly - not too appealing.

There is something you can push in there to pull the bulbs out. It's been posted here before, but I can't remember right off hand. For goodness sake, don't try to take that plastic box apart. I did that once. Yikes, what a mess!

Not the thread I was thinking about, but looks like it will work: bulb replacement.

I have done a search but have not come up with anything to push. I won't try to open the box again!

I got mine out with a set of tweesers.

I recall that I got mine in with a plastic tube that I found in my garage. I inserted the light into the tube then pressed it in.
Think of using a rubber hose to get spark plugs started.

you could try a straw or something like that.

Or a pen. Just get creative and look around the house.

good luck

Well, I tried Tweezers but the hole is too small. I tried glue and a straw. The glue held, but the head of the light broke off. I am going to have to get the cover off the climate control unit somehow. Help!!

Your '87 is likely completely different, but....

When I did this on my '84 300D climate control, it was easy. Take a pair of needle nose pliers, grab the bulb forcefully and yank, remove broken pieces one at a time. Install new bulb.

Since they were being replaced anyway, I didn't care if I broke the old ones and they were "welded" into the plastic housing from years of heat from the bulbs. What a design. Good ol' "German engineering"! (actually, that was probably designed by Lucas, has that unique fingerprint to it!)

When you replace the bulbs use the LED replacements from Autoillumination, they won't melt the plastic and will outlast the car.

I have the LED's from autolimunaton.com. Still working on getting the old bulbs out. Hard to believe they could be that tight.
