use of power inverter, voltage meter, etc.

Another thread prompted this question. I obtained a power inverter so I could run my new laptop in the car while driving...no, not for me to get on line while driving....for the kids, to play DVD movies while on a long trip. (In my 85 300TD with a new mercedes battery..nice white one!)

I dont know much about these things....will I seriously drain my battery? Will I need to run the car for, say, another hour after watching a movie to top off a depleted battery?
Is this a good excuse to install a DC Voltage meter in the car to monitor battery/charging system (I've always wanted to do this...to put in another cool gadget).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mark
