How to remove mirror

I have all the MBZ shop manuals, haynes, etc. but none tell how to remove the interior rear view mirror (overhead center near light) in my 85 300TD. A while back the thing became loose for no apparent reason....it wobbles while driving. I can't see any obvious set screw, can't twist or slide off. Ive done everything short of breaking it off. I'm hoping that I can remove it, tighten up an attachment bracket of some sort, and then replace the mirror good as new.

Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks,

Mark

Find a neighbor with a huge SUV and surprise them by actually putting it to good use: Hitch it up to the mirror and let it pull the damn thing off...

Well, maybe that's a bit extreme, but that's about what it took to get mine out the other day. It's held in the bracket by some sort of spring-loaded clips and you're supposed to be able to pull it out (maybe with a little twisting, or you can try pulling to one side or pushing to one side and pulling straight down).

Mine refused to budge; I sat on the armrest and pulled harder and harder and then all of a sudden I was in the back seat... holding the mirror, complete with mounting bracket with three screws poking out. Oops.

It ended up requiring two screwdrivers working from the INSIDE of the bracket to snap the mirror stem out of the bracket, what a major pain in the butt. Maybe the spring gets stiff over time?

Good luck!

81Wagon is right, there are two spring-loaded pins on each lateral end of the mount base that holds the mirror in, just grab the stem and pull down and toward the windshield (don't hit the windshield with it when it breaks loose) or pull down and towards the backseat.

When installing, put a dab of grease on each pin to help it snap into the roof easier.

success

Thanks. I just grabbed it and yanked, and it came off without damage. To my satisfaction, I found the smoking gun......one screw was missing...the cause of the wobble.

Thanks,

Mark
