I don't know what -30*C translates to off hand but I can tell you that is friggin cold and I wouldn't want to try it!
I wasn't aware that any of them did that, that is quite convienent as most idle to low when started which causes them to stall unless the driver holds their foot on the accelerator. I hope it doesn't try going over 1k rpms though, I heard that on some models that is where the IP doesn't try to regulate the motor from running away from itself.

Well now that I know what the temperature is all I need to figure out is what would make a person willing to put up with that crap? This upcoming week will have single digit lows (*F) and I wonder why I still live here!

I'd be willing to bet that I'm the only one here who's jelous of those temps, and I mean it! I love cold and snow, that is, as long as the summer is warm. I woudn't want it to be cold all the time, but neither would I want it to be warm all the time. That's why I couldn't stand living in the south. Reno is alright.
Back to the topic, I always thought that MB diesels don't have any automatic idle adjustment. Mslipac, is your idle consistently higher when it's colder?

my idle adjust cable gets very stiff I think it shrinkes a bit in cold weather causing my high idle I found out today so I adjusted it some more and is all good now
I tell ya it was cold today had the benz plugged in all night and still took 6 glow cycles and 2 cranks to get her going temp gauge couldnt reach 175'F in an hour of driving damn

That is a quite interesting cause of a problem, my solution wouldn't be to readjust it though. Oh no, what I'd do is move to some place warmer.
Wow you must go through glow plugs pretty quick, how can the battery even do that many cycles? You know that the glow plugs keep going like 45-60seconds after the light goes out right? I wonder if you made your own "encapsulation module" (insulation panel under the motor) if it'd start better. This way the only way for air to come in or heat to go out is through the front grill, it would have to help the block heater warm it up. When it is below freezing out even though my thermostat is good my car doesn't get up to temperature very often because I like soaking that heat up, well that is until I get outside!

mslipac, you do know that when you turn the idle adjust knob to increase idle speed, you have to press the throttle too, right? If you're not pressing the throttle, it'll feel very stiff.

DieselAddict - I do all that the knob works fine but it doesnt releave tension of the cable all the way...this is what caused my high idle
and for glowplugs i knew they stay on for a while after light goes out but it's soooooooooo cold that the engine starts up on maybe 3 or 4 cylinders and starts slowly winding down untill she's dead again so usually on 2 or 3 crank I can get enough heat in to my cylinders that they all fire. as soon as I got my car I changed my battery ( new mercedes batt ) nice white-one and all of my glowplugs another thing I was wondering I dont know how smart is it to leave car idling for two hours + unattended ! let's say you go to movies or out for dinner and just let her run for that period of time. thanks

It might also be possible to put a homemade locking device on the parking brake pedal to keep it in place. |

If it fires up there should be more heat in the cylinder from combustion than glow plugs.

moleskin - this only happens in savere cold tho like -25'c and bellow so no big deal I know my fuel system is in top shape so no worries there...it's the cold that does that to it that's all
today I have made a grill cover out of some insulated cover material but I have placed it inside of the grill so it doesnt look so crapy if it was outside...what a difference it made for me I can get normal operating temp to the motor now that's sad guys I should move to somewhere warmer

82-300td - that's a great idea but once I take the key out that shuts down all of my electrical system including much needed blower fan! and I am not sure if the charging system is routed throught the key as well it wouldnt charge the battery all that time
what I do it put a big old club on the wheel and lock it up PS do you guys know how much does 300D non turbo engine consume of diesel fuel per hour of idling time thanks

Maybe a quart (about a liter) at idle, just a stab in the dark. Truly you aren't supposed to idle a motor that long, it is supposed to be an accelerated idle if you have to. I guess it is in case the injectors are dripping down the cylinder walls?!

BoostnBenz - I idle my engine higher all the time to keep the oil pressure up and keep the engine warm...she cools off fast when idling
