Anyone rebuild their half shafts?

I just noticed that my right half shaft is starting to leak grease. 2 weeks ago I rebuilt the half shafts on my BMW 2002tii and it wasn't a bad job at all, just really messy. Is the MB shaft harder to do?

TIA,

Craig

Axel rebuild:

Replaced both on my wife's car. One we rebuilt and one we purchased.
I have never work on BMW but the boots are different than Porscha. You have to get the metal can off before you can replace boots. MB has a special tool set about $1,000.
There is a fellow on the board at "boostnbenz.1baddsm.com" he has his own site and has article on axel rebuilding with pictures.

Noticed you have two MB's and this is the diesel post area so we have to assume you need to reboot the diesel axles and not the gas model. You can't "reboot" the axles without the MB tools. (You can't technically "rebuild" them without destroying the temper of the metal.) Do both sides at the same time. I see you are in CA. One of my mechanics has the tools to reboot them. Email me from my profile address and I'll give you the information.
Hope you have a second car while this is being completed.

Craig,
I REPLACED both rear half shafts on my 92 400E. One boot was busted and I figured at 200K mi, they were in need of replacement VS simply repairing the boot and replenishing the grease. Go to
www.Car-Part.com
I got a used set w/ like 40K mi for maybe a couple of hundred bucks. Sure enough the replacement set were stiffer and felt better than my "good" one that wasn't busted. Somethimes its better(read cheaper) to replace than to rebuild.....but the dealer NOR the indie will tell you that. I always try to get an estimate of what the rebuild cost is VS replacement cost. If they are close, i replace. If replace is cheaper, I replace. If rebuild has no or very short warranty, I replace.
My advice...replace them puppies.
You'll see on the site several places advertising the part and you'll sometimes see the mileage listed

This is for my 300CD. I just went through my receipts and the PO did the right shaft (the one that's leaking) 30K ago.

I didn't know if they were easily rebuildable.

Rebooted properly: 1) the proper equipment AND 2) the right parts and 3) the expertise, the rebooted axle should not have split after 35,000. The PO put in a pos rebuilt unit.

The PO was charged $469 for a rebuilt shaft from a highly questionable shop in West LA.
