2.5 turbodiesel

im going to have a look at a 87 190d 2.5 turbo a little later today.is this the same 2.5 turbo engine offered in later vintage 124 models?are their any issues with this car/engine that i should be aware of?

Thumbs up

Michael, that's a great car with a great engine. I had one a few years ago, and wish I never sold it (sold @ 90,000 miles, beginning to have transmission woes, not sure why).

It is the same as the engine used in the W124s, except I think the later 124s have more computer controls (on the engine), and the 87 has relatively few.

My daughter loves her's. It's very quick and handles well. The only problems I've seen are the AC (our stopped working) and we found some parts of the friction ban the when the transmission was flushed.

Ours has 211K Miles on it. The transmission was reported by the PO to have been rebuilt (by the previous PO) at the 175K mark.

I think that the 124s have electronic control of the turbo wastegate, and the earlier 190D Turbo (1987 only) has a mechanical wastegate. A friend of mine is having trouble with the electronic control of the wastegate on his 1992 300D 2.5 Turbo. It occasionally won't make any boost, and then correct itself for no reason at all and run perfectly. The 190 should never have this problem.

$3500 Canadian is a great deal if everything checks out OK.

Please do a compression test prior to purchase. There have been many of these engines needing headgasket work

I rarely (if ever!) hear of OM602's needing head gasket work. They seem to be as bulletproof as the OM617!

well i went to see the car last night.i cant say that i was surprised or disapointed but heres my report.the car was blocked inside the garage by another vehicle so a test drive was not possible.the car is light blue metallic with blue tex interior.paint on the roof was faded.generally good over the rest. rear jackpoints were rusted out other than that no noticeable rust.paint looks original.interior suffers from the usual cracks to the dash and console.seats were good although i noticed the fronts looked a little oversized for the car.the engine seemed to start fine from cold.low idle was rough but smoothed out nicely with just a light touch on the pedal.seemed to be a little metallic knock from the injectors initially but that disapeared minutes later.the garage quickly filled up with exhaust smoke that seemed to be very fuel rich.the owner mentioned the car was emission tested and passed 3mnths prior when at the same time it received ontario safety certification.the engine area seemed fairly clean with no noticeable leaks of oil or coolant.upon checking the coolant expansion tank i noticed no coolant or sludge but heat was flowing to the interior.owner mentioned the heater core was just replaced.i will be going back for the test drive a little later this week

Cool

Sounds like some things have already been taken care of, such as the heater core.

Mine was the same light blue metallic, I think it's called Diamond Blue or something similar. I had navy blue MB-Tex interior with wool seat covers on the front (dark blue got hot in the summer).

Make sure you take it for a nice long test drive and open 'er up.

The OM602.961 engine is almost as indestructable as the old OM617.95 engines and is actually a bit more powerful and less complicated than the engine used in the '90s 124 300D 2.5s. The vacuum pumps usually require replacement every 150kmi (they can't be rebuilt) and the serpentine belt tensioner often requires work about every 75kmi. The 722.4 series transmissions seldom last much past past 200kmi although some that were largely highway driven, have. The AC system is EXPENSIVE to service and at 17 years is likely to need work and that will be expensive as parts are expensive and the work is VERY labor intensive.

Aside from oil oozing at the right front of the engine (above the alternator - 3 of my 5 OM60x engines ooze there), head gasket problems on that engine are VERY uncommon.

My 190D 2.5t is my favorite car!

Marshall

so these are not the same motor as the s class diesel. thinking of a diesel as my next car.
are these faster(quicker) than the s class cars or even close. i like the bigger cars but when i saw one in the paper here , my thought was this may be more dependable tha the 2.3 gas motors in the 190e
still lean toward a larger car
rich
