That's right! I bought my first Benz this year and do I know rust signs now! On mine the coating on the metal (esp rear floorpans) was letting moisture migrate and rust the metal inside the coating, so you couldn't see how bad it was until bashing off large chunks of the coating. Kinda hard to check with the owner looking on...

Are the rear shocks blown on that wagon? It looks to me it's sagging a little too much.

New members should also check under the floor mats to make sure there isn't any hidden rust there if they're buying a car that has seen snow.
The water from my winter boots soaked through the sound insulation and pooled underneath in these ribs. Most of the time it can go un noticed if the insulation hasn't cracked yet. I discovered mine very early and was able to dry this puddle of pink water that had formed. There is a little bit of rust, but enough that 30 minutes of work and POR 15 will fix right up. Push on the paneling and if water oozes out like a sponge run away from the car or better yet knock of $500-1000 of the asking price and say there is water hiding under the paneling. Everyone should consider ripping up that sound insulation and putting some sort of newer material underneath. I was devastated when I started pulling that crap away.

how about that?
This is where the rear sub-frame rest... Right side...MB deny any wrong doing on this, calling it wear... This is corrosion which is totally different. Rusty.

I dont know how guys can even contemplate cars with all this rust. Over here if a car has one spot as big as a 5c piece its considered a RUST BUCKET. Only fit for a parts car or the junk yard. seeing that lower control arm that some one contemplated welding amassed me. If some one did a weld repair on that, they should be locked up !! Seeing those spring perch's that needed repairs just convinced me of 1 model Benz not to consider. The only way to fix rust in a car is a new body = a new car !! When rusty structural parts fail its normally at speed and catastrophically. Rust like is seen in some of these cars is a sign that the car has reached the end of its useful life, time to part it out.

This post has ruined my Sunday. I'm already as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs when I have to go out in this %$&#*^ salt.
I cram WD-40 into the rust spots I can see when things are dry. Lower edge of wagon hatch, around the antenna opening, lower door edges, under the rear hatch window rubber, pitting on lower rear fender where the wheel splashes up, a couple of bubbles at lower front fender trim. Don't know if it helps but makes me feel a little better. |

my thoughts
Rust is like cancer, it will spread. Fortunately if caught in time you can kill it if you can see it and can get to it. I use a product call Phosphate and Etch that can be bought at Home Depot(cheap green Stuff in a gallon jug) It kills/converts the rust and prevents an more rust from forming. I have brushed it on bare metal with the stuff and let it sit out in the open outside. The metal is protected by the layer of Phosphate that is left behind when the stuff dries. One word of warning, it will damage or remove existing paint. However, after it dries and sanded slightly to remove any scale, it can be painted over. I've found that it seems to help the paint stick better to the metal. I guess that's where the etch part of the product comes into play. Having that protective coating under the paint is a bonus too.
Just my experience. |

Around here they don't use salt, even though there's tons of snow. I like it, most of my vehicles are 30 or older, and these cars don't exist on the east coast anymore.
My 300sd had only two rust spots, both extremely odd- The top edge of the driver's side door frame, and the lower end of the A pillar specifically around the driver's door limit strap (don't know the specific MB name of this part, the piece that stops the door from opening too far). That's it. All drains were open, except for some fairly recent mouse activity, so it didn't rot from the inside. Just plain weird. |

I learned my lesson the hard way. My car is pretty much unroadworthy after a year of driving it with existing rust. Road wear exposed a lot of new rust spots that were hidden by the underbody.

I think more and more are coming out, its getting more and more frequent on the internet that MB owners are horrified when the paint peels off and reveal the underbody totally corroded... And this after 10/ 12 years only... Shocking.

RUST
Mr Hunter !!!!
Some rust for you !! Dont worry its a w114 parts car. Has been off the road for over 10 years. I think it may have been in a bad accident when it was new and not repaired very well. It has a Fred Flintstones type floor, the base of the doors are not there. It was made unroadworthy, never to be re-registered for road use. It has never seen salt or snow. The kids used it as a farm car for a few months until I discovered the lack of floor, I didnt want them using their feet for brakes at 40mph!! a couple more pics in the next post.
