You sound like you know what you're doing...

I'd take a stab at trying to find a good used motor.

Post on the "parts" "vintage" and "diesel" fora here to start. You can also access the classified section of the Mercedes club's magazine "The Star" via their website (MBCA.org), if you don't get the magazine.

These (and the later W123s) are very "modular" cars...when something is done wrong or wears out, you can get it replaced without having to throw the whole thing away.

I love the later W123 (have 3 of 'em), and the earlier '70s models in good shape are getting harder to find in good shape...would be worth making an effort to put this little guy in shape and enjoy a model that's starting to grow in collector/enthusiast interest.

I agree, the car is becoming a classic -- or will be soon.

However, I think it is time for me to move on. The car's headliner just fell down, the brakes still need work, etc. I think I will be off to a much better start if I can find a good 240D for $2000 or so.

Best of luck...I LOVE both of my 240's,

although this is a non-turbo model. Same body as the 300D turbo, MUCH simpler mechanicals.

I often recommend to people shopping for a Benz of this (or other) era that they pick up a copy of "The Mercedes-Benz Buyer's Guide", a $20 paperback by Frank Barrett. There's a LOT of very useful information on what to look for and avoid in cars you may consider. Also a nice history of the marque.

I found my second 240 only 20 miles from home...$2,500 for a two owner no-rust car (another grand to get it through state inspection). There are STILL nice examples out there. Good luck...and hope you continue to post.
