I like grease fittings...
at one point some car manufacturers started making the place for greasing but putting solid plugs into the holes... the idea being that lazy people often just stuck a grease gun to the dirty nipple instead of cleaning the dirt off the end... thus forcing grit into the joint..
So you would have to take each solid plug out, put in the zerk fitting...and then take it out and replace the solid plug...
To do it correctly you do need to know to watch the boot and stop as soon as you see any swelling... to keep from blowing its seal...
At one time little caps were available to fit over the zerk fittings to keep them clean.

If it dont have a nipple then if you are careful, you can back off the clip on the boot and fill some grease into it. It worked for me & after 800k miles the joints were not bad!
I also drilled into the back hubs & nippled so I could pump grease into the rear wheel bearings. It got rid of a bearing noise & saved a rear wheel bearing replacement.

The more nipples the better!!

I read all the way to post 11 before I discovered this started in 04. good thread. then no thread is too old to reread.

In post#30 I looked in the http://www.theautochannel.com/autoparts/suspensionbestjaguar/itemo7977_57410.html site to see the ball joint boots. too bad they don`t give sizes. they have them for about every vehicle.

they even have them for tie rod ends, though I don`t know if they have them for the MB. I had the car in the shop to have the ball joints replaced. they replaced the 3 I noticed that were bad but not the 4th. now it is ripped open.
the alignment shop couldn`t adjust the tie rods, said they were frozen. so the indie replaced them with new ones.

Now I notice the tie rod boots are cracked. think they would last more than 3 yrs or what ever it has been. I wonder if there is a boot for them?

Charlie,
I have learned the hard way not to use after market boots. I replaced a couple of tie-rod end boots for a road worthy a few years ago, they lasted all of a month. It looked like the grease made them crack. They looked good in the packet but you cant tell that they are made from C##P rubber.

greasy nipples and a year later squeaky ball joints ???

Thank you for the info, I guess they all come out of the same chinese warehouse.
You would think the boot would last the life of the part, but then they wouldn`t be selling as many parts. this is all part of the planned obsolesence.

I was surprised to find that the tie rod ends I bought at Murry's (O'Rileys) for my Focus had zerk fittings. You had to thread them in. Be careful not to overfill or you will dislodge the boot from it's seal.
