I've got you all beat - 18. I paid $400 for a 1962 190c with a shot clutch and a bad transmission.

Bruce Bonds 03-07-2004 08:41 PM

I was 26 in Germany in 1977. '73 220D.

Never thought I would own a Benz, bought my first one as a wreck. Should have been a parts car, but I put it back together. Have driven it over 1.5 years and with another parts car to boot, still have less than $1500 in it.:D

1983 300TD 03-07-2004 09:31 PM

I was 20. It was a 1984 300TD Wagon, astral silver, Euro model. At the time, I didn't even know what it was, but I knew I had to make it mine. :)

DieselAddict 03-07-2004 09:44 PM

My interest in MB diesels started in the spring of 2001 but I didn't buy one until the summer of 2002 when I was 25. That's when the addiction began.:)

ForcedInduction 03-07-2004 10:13 PM

17 when I bought my 82 TD.

mplafleur 03-07-2004 10:37 PM

I think I was 24. I bought a '75 300D. I thought I'd buy a slow diesel after I totaled my Datsun 240ZX.

kmaysob 03-07-2004 11:30 PM

im 16 but i bout mine when i was 15 8 months ago for $300 it rus and drives too.

tripacer 03-08-2004 12:34 AM

I'm 48 and I just bought my first one! '82 TD:)

300SDog 03-08-2004 01:12 AM

First yr college, age 20 - nearly 30 yrs ago. Car was '65 220Sb with blown head-gasket for $600..... an easy DIY repair and the seller thought he ripped ME off. It was an immaculate 4-spd antracite grey, red leather interior, manual sunroof car that was less than 10 yrs old at the time.

<edit: I'd be amazed if *anybody* who bought their first Benz at an early age ever drove anything else for the rest of their life.

240Demon 03-08-2004 01:42 AM

I was 16...I got my 240D on July 1st 2002...and 14,000 miles later...we are still going...albeit with the piston slapping replacement motor.

redbaronph123 03-08-2004 02:20 AM

i was 25. it's my 79 300TD euro.

the other MBs we had were more of a family car... the TD was my own.. after selling my jap car.

wolf_walker 03-08-2004 03:34 AM

I'm surprised how many youngish folks there are here..

25 for me, last Thanksgiving. Traded my father a pretty nice 82 VW Caddy turbo diesel for the 300D, that I've been trying to weasel away from first his wife, then him, for the better part of a decade now.

dabenz 03-08-2004 07:46 AM

28, but I'd been wrenching it before I bought it. I think age 10 or so the first time I let out a clutch on a truck. Age 12 when I first backed a truck with a trailer attached (I remember that day!).

Antony 03-08-2004 08:13 AM

I was 35 when I bought the gasser. 36 when I got the 220d.

MicroRacer 03-08-2004 08:33 AM

I bought my first Mercedes 83 300D of of Ebay 5 months ago. I'm 47 young. I wish I had discovered diesels a long time ago.

Tymbrymi 03-08-2004 09:54 AM

18 -- Bought the '79 300SD for $500 and drove it home. Was so cheap because the kickdown wiring melted itself (and all others around it). Never done anything but an oil change before I bought the car, first thing I did to the car was remove the dashboard and rewire what needed it. A little over a year has gone by since then and I can't imagine NOT owning a Mercedes.

Bailey'sBenz 03-08-2004 11:11 AM

17, and glad I did.

1980 300D. Bought it brand new in Dallas when I was 17. I’m still driving it today. My daughter is 6 now, and wants it as her first car. That's fine by me.

N8Scafe 03-08-2004 11:16 AM

23. Needed to buy a 4-door since we had our first baby on the way. Saw this cute little green MB, and went for it. This was almost three years ago.

Hatterasguy 03-08-2004 12:17 PM

Wanted one when I was 15.
Bought my SDL 2 months ago off ebay, I'm 18 and can't imagine ever driveing anything else! Thats the problem with driveing a MB it ruins you, everything else is just cheap junk to me now.

VeeDubTDI 03-08-2004 05:05 PM

I was 16 when I inherited my parents' 190D. They sold it a year later because they thought it was going to nickel and dime them to death.

I was 21 when I bought the SDL... I'm 22 now.

Lee Derby 03-08-2004 05:57 PM

71 when I bought my '83 300D. Wish I hadn't waited so long.

WANT '71 280SEL 03-08-2004 06:17 PM

I agree with hatterasguy, I work at a used dealership that mainly sells 1-3 year old Gm cars, and the difference is that of night and day between them and my SD. Everytime a friend asks me about a specific car, I always say junk, no matter what they say. Every car has its problems, but MB's are manageable and make up for it in so many other ways....
Thanks
David

too old

I was 52 when I bought my first, an'87 420 SEL. Next came a'78 300D, currently w/ a bad transmission($800). Then came my current fave, an'81 240D stick($500. I put on new front brake pads, front shocks, and a used rear axle, total cost about $1000, I am putting a timing chain on soon). I am currently negotiating to sell my 420 and buy an '85 300TDT. I always hated to wok on cars when I was younger, mainly because of poor design and engineering, fasteners designed to work only once, etc. I love benzes, wish I had found them years ago.

86560SEL 03-08-2004 09:26 PM

I think I was 23 when I bought my 74 240D in 1999. Never got to drive it though, as the engine had a severe knock, because the previous owner (owner after my uncle who bought it nearly new) had left the oil cap off. I discovered that it had set on wet ground so long, on flats- that the floor pans had rusted out. Otherwise the car was 100% rust free southern car. I sold it for $75. two months later. :D

Orkrist 03-09-2004 05:57 AM

I was 30 when I bought my first and only MB.

300SDL 03-09-2004 08:34 AM

17 .. My Sdl

TonyFromWestOz 03-09-2004 08:51 AM

@ 52 I bought my first MB

I have liked diesels for the past 20 years & driven them for 15 yrs.
When I bought my W123 300D with small dents in every panel, I looked for one with good bodywork. the Mrs took one I bought for the body.
I had to buy another parts car.

Lou K 03-09-2004 12:15 PM

I was 26 when I bought my 1st MB, a 220 gas sedan.

Grdenko 03-09-2004 01:17 PM

i was 18 when i bought the car i have now. it was the car i drove throughout high school and i bought it from my parents. car was first owned by my grandparents, so im keeping it all in the family. i hope to own it for the rest of my life. i think i can pull it off.

BigMikeT57 03-09-2004 01:47 PM

45 when I bought the 420SEL 2 years ago.

michakaveli 03-09-2004 03:54 PM

22 when I found my '97 E300 on eBay in October of 2002. I love my w210 but pray for the future that MB fixes their problems and gets back to building the finest diesels on the planet. I'm gonna try to keep this one as long as I can. It's so easy and fun to work on the w210 that touching anything else is almost a crime. Granted the w210's have their problems, at least they are fun to work on :D

I'm shocked to see the number of people in their teen's and 20's here. It's a good thing!

lietuviai 03-09-2004 08:26 PM

Thirty-something when I bought my 300D. I could have bought the same car new but I couldn't see spending that much money on a car.

190D22 03-09-2004 10:22 PM

Well I was 15 when my old man bought it for me... does that count? :D

Hopefully I CAN buy one on my own here soon.

I was 14 when my dad bought me my first car but it wasn't an M-B, it was a POS!
