Idle control cable question - 1980 300D

The idle control cable on my D is all melted looking under the hood... the know wont turn, and the cable looks kinked... I'm in for a new one, if I can figure out which, but I'm wondering if it's really necessary... it starts alright with a little gas. That's the main function of the knob, right, starting? Also, what the heck caused the melting? Something about a ground fault's been tickling my brain... any input?

Also, to get the cable, how do I know my 'Chassis range'? None of the numbers I've looked at on FrauGreasel correspond to the ones referenced in the part page.

Product Fits
Idle Control Cable
Chassis: -164250

Idle Control Cable
Chassis: 164521-

Thanks, all!

"it starts alright with a little gas."
It should start with just diesel..... check your glowplugs or keyboard....
"what the heck caused the melting? " Heat ?
Look for more stamped metal tags on your car... or your vin number.. maybe that is what they are referencing...
But , yes, that is the main function of that cable.... I have never turned mine...

Teh numbers are you rlast 6 digitd of your VIN. Look on your a pilor next to the state inspection sticker. That VIN number woudl look something like this

Vin WDBAB23A1DB363866

Notice the last 6 numbers 363866 are the numbers they refer to.
If the item is -363866 then every car builts up to 363866 is covered.
If the website says 363866- then its everycar higher then that VIN number.

Now for engine numbers, my example would be

ENGINE 12-077082

So anything -077082 would be up to that engine number, etc. etc. Same with the transmission number

TRANS 02 070232

Thanks for that, I guess the parts for the earlier models are for MUCH earlier models than mine... my numbers are way above the cutoff... thanks for the clarity.
