little filter

while working to get the trailing arm off today, i noticed a small filter looking thing coming off of the fuel line leading up to the gas tank. Is that a filter? if so wouldnt i want to replace this when i did my filters?

Diesels have a fuel tank, not a gas tank.
Please post a picture of this suspected filter, may have been added by PO.
:EDIT: this part is the fuel tank breather valve MB# 2014760232
it prevents excess pressure buildup in the tank.
Have a great day.

look infront of the car near the primer pump and see if the filter there (right angle style) looks like the one by your tank. If so then it is an additional filter added by the previous owner that is the same as stock prefilter. If it does not look the same then take it out and get a ride to the "jolly rancher autoparts cheapo store" and get them to match it.

I cleaned out the fuel tank on my 16 and I noticed that same piece. My father in law, who is a Mercedes Master Tech and service manager at the local dealership, called it a breather check valve or something like that.
