There was a definite metallic tapping noise consistent with RPM when the chain was all fouled up. It was very slight.
I too would have assumed a ruined vavle. At the time, some from this site said that if the car ran fine after it was corrected, I might be able to assume no damage. I did run okay for some time. Would a leak down test diagnose the bent valve (loss of compression in that cylinder?) Engine has 300,000 since the rebuild. I guess at this mileage, there are several things that have to be ruled out before considering bent valve. But your point is noted- audible noise means damage any way you slice it. Thanks for all the help, I wish I could give some results with valve adjustment and chain stretch checks, but I'm currently removing the drivers head on the 4.5 and it cosumes me. I will post these things when I find out at a later date.

Injection Shops
There's a pretty good "Bosch" authorized service center in Santa Rosa. Found them through the Bosch web site.
He checked my injectors on his equipment in about 10 minutes, told me they were mostly okay, as one had a slightly bad pattern but he felt they could still be used together with no problems. Could have just as easily told me they were in serious need of repair too and I wouldn't have known the difference. Charged me zero... Those are the kinds of shops that I always recommend to friends.
