This is a "shaggy dog". Bear with me. The car never ran right - lethargic performance and it rocked steadily at idle. My other 300D didn't do this, so I took the '85 to the shop. The mech adjusted the bolt coming out the back of the governor side of the F/I pump. Picked up the car, ran pretty good and didn't rock. Drove it several miles, came to a stop, car rocked VIOLENTLY. Mech told me "undo what I did", i.e., adjust the bolt in (toward the pump). Didn't fix it completely, but was better. Thought I'd replace the fuel injector nozzles just to be sure they weren't the problem. (No, I didn't test them first - figured they had 167K on them, so...). After replacing injectors, started car, immediately heard a new noise - a "banging" eminating from, I believe, cylinder 5. Removed the new injector in #5, took it to a shop, tested it, tested fine. Put it back in - banging still there. Car bangs at idle and up to about 1500 rpms, after that, goes away. At 1500 rpms, it's a pronounced banging, then at 1600-1800, it just goes away. Cleaned F/I pump fuel delivery check valve. OK now. Set valves. Checked vacuum values - all OK. Checked compression in three cylinders we could get to with gauge (5 wasn't one of them), compression is fine. Electrical values are all OK. Took off fuel filter, filled new one up with BG 248, replaced filter. Started car, let run at 1500 rpm for about 2.5 minutes, shut off, let sit overnight, then took out for a speed run. Car is still banging. Nobody here seems to know what to look for. Your advice is requested.
