Windows won't go up

OK here's a strange one....my son has an '84 300D. My wife drove the car today - put the drivers window down (electric windows) and it didn't want to go back up. Trying to diagnose the problem I put the rear window down on the drivers side, and now it won't go up. Passanger side windows work fine. I suppose a hint here is that both windows went down fine but don't want go back up. No sound like a motor trying to move, no clicking, no noise at all, just dead windows, Any ideas?

Something is probably wrong with your switches. I actually have this problem intermittently - wiggling the switch a bit tends to make it work. I'll have to replace them sooner or later though.

In an emergency situation you can switch the switches from the passenger side to get the windows closed . Anyone spill anthing on the console?

There have been instances where the wires in the flex-tube that carries current between the door and the door pillar have been work-hardened and become intermittent. Try operating the switches with the door open, to see if that helps - if yes, the wires can be cut and re-spliced where the break is occurring, if not then you could have bad (or dirty) switches.

Check your fuses. The MBs I have are fused lft front and rt rear windows, and rt frt and left rear, but don't know about the 84 model.

If you work on the console switches, be very careful not break off the small post attached to the wood console. The correct way to remove the wood to have access to the switches is to remove the ashtray and the metal bracket behind it. Then pull BACKWARDS to free the small post. This is actually safer then trying to remove the switches individually with a tiny screw driver. I always have dinged the wood when I attempt this.

While in there, you will probably find enough loose chang for a trip to your local fast-food franchise!.

they are cross fused in the 84 as well.

in an emergency another member jumped the fuse in the fuse box directly from the battery to get the window up.

Window problem too

I'm trying to find the fuses that control the window operations. Originally the lf and rr were working and the rf and lr were not. I messed with all of the fuses and then the rf and lr worked and the others did not. I then cleaned the contacts on all of the fuses and now the lf and rr are working again and the other two are not. I'm not sure where to look next. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

there should be four fuses, one at each of the corners of the fuse box.

Thanks for the tip. I found a bad fuse that I had missed when cleaning them. The metal on the tip was bad and not making contact. You set me straight and the problem is solved. Thanks again for you help.

glad you got it sorted out. there have been many times when i thought a fuse looked good but it wasn't. the tips at each end can get worn out and it is easily overlooked.

if you had one bad fuse then it could be that you have others. i found some in my car that were no doubt the originals from '84!
