240D/300D Manual Transmission Question
Can anyone tell me when Mercedes used the older style 4 speed manual tranny with the removable bellhousing, versus the new one piece design in the 240D and non-turbo 300D? I have searched everywhere I can think of and cannot get this info. I want to say that around 1980 or 1981 they went to the one piece design, but I'm guessing there may have been some overlap with the two. Specifically, I'd love to know a way of telling if a car I'm looking at for parts would have the 2 piece design, which is what I am looking for.
Thanks in advance. J.B. |

TomJs one piece came out of an '82 model 240D...that's about the earliest I can tell that the one-piece was used.
You should be able to look at the top of the tranny behind the engine on a 240 and tell if it's the one-piece or two-piece...that is, if it's clean enough.
