Early 80s 300TD wagon - can buy cheap- good deal?

My uncle called and said he seen a early 80s 300 TD turbo diesel station wagon for sale. He said that the girl there did not know a lot about it, but it was her grandfathers car that passed away a while back. My uncle is going to call her father later. It has been setting a few years, but it is still in good conditions. He said it was dark blue w/ tan interior. He said there is one small rust blister around one of the lower rocker panels at the jack point. Interior is good and it has 208K. He said they are asking $750. for it. I am not even sure at this point if it will run. Maybe a good battery, some good fuel, it may start right up. My uncle said they may even take $500. if you offered it. What would be a good maximum price for one of these cars in this condition? (running/not running). He has no interest in it, but I may have, as I am looking for something fuel efficient and safe to drive to work. Thanks for any advice.

You ain't bought it yet? If the interior is in good condition it is easily worth $750.

No. I am not even sure where it is at. I know is local, but my uncle did not give me the details. He was driving down the highway on the cell phone. He said he would call the man later and give me the details on the car.

Will let you know what happens.

Too rough for me! I went and only looked at the car this afternoon. The car is a 1980 and it is not the turbo like I thought. The condition was also not as good as I expected. Also, my uncle said that the owner said that unless you shifted it manually, that it was extremely sluggish. When it was shifted manually- it was a little better. The interior was good, but it has rust holes on one fender well and lower quarter panel and the other side has rust hole inside the other wheel well. It is unusual that this car has this much rust, because rust is not a problem here on cars, but I guess it is possible that it was from the north originally. Interestingly, the rocker panels are very solid, even around the jack holes. I guess I will pass on this one.
