to buy or not to buy?

I am looking at a 1981 240d stick, I really like it and the guy only wants a thousand dollars for the thing. My question is this, The transmission does not shift into gear, well more accurately the clutch does not work, is this a hydraulic clutch? If so where do I start looking for the problem? Any possible ideas?
